The Demon Deacons scored a pair of goals while recording a third-straight shutout at Spry Stadium.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 2 Wake Forest (6-1-1, 4-1-0) got revenge for its only loss so far in the 2020 season, as the Demon Deacons downed No. 3 Clemson (5-2-1, 3-2-1) 2-0 on Friday night at Spry Stadium.
"It was a team performance tonight," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "Guys stepped up and we needed a lot of guys, we used a lot of guys. I think we bent but didn't break at the end. But I do think a lot of young guys stepped up. I thought Colin Thomas was great, I thought Jahlane Forbes was great, Cristian Escribano, Garrison Tubbs. Just the freshmen alone did such a great job. Great team win."
Wake Forest got its first goal of the night in the 40th minute from defender Nico Benalcazar, as the sophomore pressed forward through Clemson's defensive line before beating Tigers goalkeeper George Marks. It marked his third career goal and first against an ACC opponent.
Forbes was credited with his first career assist on the goal a little more than a minute after coming into the game.
The Demon Deacons doubled up their lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute when Harris finished an all-out effort from Wake Forest that started in its own half of the field before sophomore Takuma Suzuki found senior Machop Chol who placed a ball into the mouth of the goal before the Middlesbrough, England, native, put the ball in the back of the net.
The outing marked the third-straight clean sheet at Spry Stadium for the Demon Deacons, as goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg recorded four saves.
Prior to the start of the match, Wake Forest honored the senior class of goalkeeper Dominic Peters, defender Tyrrell Moore, midfielder Kyle McCurley, midfielder Justin McMaster, defender Michael DeShields and Chol.
Over the last four years, this group has helped lead the Demon Deacons to more than 50 weeks ranked in the top-10 of the national polls while also being ranked No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll 20 times.
Additionally, this group has now won 17 more matches than any other NCAA Division I program since the start of the 2017 season.
Wake Forest will close out the regular season next Saturday when the Demon Deacons face NC State in Raleigh, N.C. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and be televised on RSN.
