The Seminoles scored three goals in the first 21 minutes en route to a 4-0 win over the Deacs.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A slow start proved costly as Wake Forest fell to No. 2 Florida State, 4-0, at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Seminoles (4-0-0, 4-0-0 ACC) scored three times in the first 21 minutes, including goals in the sixth, 12th, and 21st minute.
"There was no intensity from us at all [in the first half]. We didn't pressure the ball at all and we dropped too deep," head coach Tony da Luz said. "You can't absorb that much pressure from Florida State. This is the best Florida State team I've seen in all my years. Top to bottom, their depth is incredible, so it's like playing grown women. This is a really good team, and if you're not fully committed from the first minute, you're going to pay the price and we paid the price early."
After conceding 12 shots in the opening half, Wake Forest cut that to five in the second half, though one found the back of the net in the 85th minute.
"Our pride kicked in a little bit after halftime. We talked about some things at halftime as far as communication...I thought we did a better job in the second half of just communicating and getting a little tighter on them. We played some good sequences and got in their box a few times. That's a really good team and I'd love to play them again because you can learn so much from playing against that quality."
Sophie Faircloth took the lone shot on goal for the Deacs, while Giovanna DeMarco attempted a shot in the second half which missed just wide of the right post.
Mia Raben made five saves in goal in the first half, and Madison Howard made one stop in the second half.
For Florida State, the goals were scored by Leilanni Nesbeth, Emily Madril, Kristina Lynch and Yujie Zhao. Jenna Nighswonger had a pair of assists.
The Deacs are back in action next Sunday with a trip to Clemson.
