WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest men's basketball defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 74-57 for the first time since the 2013-14 season on Tuesday night at the LJVM Coliseum. It was the Deacs' largest margin of victory over North Carolina since 2002.

Andrien White led the Deacs with 15 points behind four three-pointers. Brandon Childress recorded a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 assists. Freshman Ody Oguama grabbed a team-best eight boards to go along with eight points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The game opened with both teams starting slow offensively, with the Deacs leading 12-10 before going on a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 8:30 to play.  An 8-0 Wake Forest run, sparked by a 4-point play from White, pushed the lead to 29-15 with 5:15 to go in the half. Another 8-0 run gave the Deacs a 39-19 lead with 2:15 in the half before Wake took a 44-26 lead into the break, its largest halftime lead of the season. White had 12 points and Childress had seven assists in the first half to lead the Deacs.

Wake Forest (11-13, 4-10 ACC) opened the second half on a 10-2 run to push the lead to 26, its largest of the season, at 54-28 over the 3:30 of the half. The Tar Heels (10-14, 3-10 ACC) cut the lead to 18 at the midway point of the half and used a 9-0 run to close within 10 points, 64-54, with 3:15 to play but the Deacs pushed the final margin to 17 at 74-57.j

NOTEWORTHY

  • Largest margin of victory for Wake in the series since a 90-66 win in 2002
  • Childress' double-double was the first with points and assists since Bryant Crawford vs. Kansas State in the 2017 NCAA Tournament
  • The Deacs have won their pink game for the sixth straight season

QUOTABLE

"I thought that the momentum that we created in the first half gave us a lot of energy and a lot of juice going into halftime," head coach Danny Manning said. "We shot the ball at a really high clip, made some tough shots, we shared the ball and there was great ball movement. In the second half not as much. We struggled from the field so to speak in terms of our shooting percentage and amount of makes. We had some looks that we didn't knock down... We're always happy to win an ACC game, and you always are pleased to grab a Big Four game."
