Wake Forest Downs No. 7 Duke in Double-Overtime Thriller

2/25/2020 10:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Wake Forest men's basketball upset No. 7 Duke 113-101 in double overtime on Tuesday night at the LJVM Coliseum. It was the first overtime game between the two teams since Feb. 13, 2003, when Wake defeated the Blue Devils 94-80 in double overtime.

Olivier Sarr led the Demon Deacons with a career-high 25 points. Chaundee Brown had 23 points for his fifth 20-point game of the season and Jahcobi Neath added 16 points, matching his career high. Brandon Childress scored 13 of his 17 points in the overtimes and Isaiah Mucius added 16 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Deacons got off to a strong start offensively and took a 13-7 lead over the first six minutes. Wake pushed the lead to 29-18 with 8:00 to play in the half as Neath scored 10 of the Deacs' first 29 points. The Deacs led by as many as 12 in the first half before Duke used a late run to tie the game at 39-39 at the break. Both Neath and Brown scored 11 first half points to lead Wake.

Duke (23-5, 13-4 ACC) used an early 8-0 run in the second half to take a 56-46 lead with 13:00 to play. The Blue Devils led by 12 before a 6-0 Deacon run cut the lead in half, 62-56, with 9:40 to play. Wake drew within four at 69-65 with 5:30 to go and trailed 79-76 with 31.7 left after Sarr scored on an alley-oop from Neath. After a steal, Brandon Childress made a three to tie the game 18 seconds left. An offensive foul on Duke gave the Deacs the ball back with 8.1 left but Childress' floater as time expired rolled off the rim to send the game to overtime.

Wake (12-15, 5-12 ACC) led 85-84 at the midway point of overtime after a pull-up jumper from Childress. A layup from Sarr with 1:15 left pushed the lead to 89-86 and Wake held an 89-88 lead with a minute to go. Childress had a layup-and-one with 46.9 left to make the score 92-88. Wake led 94-92 with 30.0 left and Mucius pushed the lead to 96-92 at the line with 22.3 left before a Duke triple made the lead 96-95 with 16.0 left. Mucius was fouled again with 11.4 and went 1-of-2 to make the score 97-95 before Duke tied it from the line with 6.6 to go and forced a second overtime.

Childress opened the second overtime with a triple and a putback from Oguama gave Wake an early five-point lead with 3:00 to go. A Mucius layup made it a 7-0 run as Wake led 104-97 with 2:20 to play.  A Childress jumper made it 107-99 with just over a minute left and his layup with under a minute extended the lead to 109-101, before a dunk from Mucius sealed the 113-101 victory.

NOTEWORTHY
  • The win was Wake's highest ranked victory since an 82-72 win over then No. 4 Duke in 2014
  • Olivier Sarr had his third career 20-point game, his first against an ACC opponent
  • Jahcobi Neath scored in double figures for the second straight game (first two career double figure games)
  • Chaundee Brown's 18 points were his most against an ACC opponent this season
  • Brandon Childress (1,341) moved into 27th place on Wake Forest's all-time scoring list, passing Delaney Rudd (1,329) and Codi Miller-McIntyre (1,329)
  • It was Wake's third overtime game this season (1-2 record)
  • It was only the 2nd multiple OT contest between Wake Forest and Duke in official ACC play. The first was the contest at the Joel in 2003.
QUOTABLE
"I thought that was an unbelievable college basketball game," head coach Danny Manning said. "Especially for us in the area where the Big 4 is important with all the attention that all our schools get being in the ACC conference. Probably a little easier for us to say because we won the game, but I still think when you look at plays guys made, the effort level that both guys played with, I thought it was outstanding and very fortunate to be part of a game like that. Tonight, we needed to get off to a good start and we were able to do that. I thought our guys did a really good job of executing."

UP NEXT
Wake Forest concludes its home schedule on Saturday by hosting Notre Dame. Game time is 4 p.m. and the game will air on the Regional Sports Networks (FS Carolinas). Prior to the game, the three senior members of the team (Brandon Childress, Torry Johnson, Andrien White) will be honored during Senior Day festivities.
