Wake Forest Women take ACC Championship in DMR

SOUTH BEND, IND. – Wake Forest took first place on Thursday night in the women's distance medley relay to highlight the first day of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships taking place on the campus of Notre Dame.

After the first day, the Wake Forest men are in fifth place with seven points while the women are in sixth place with 10 points.

The distance medley relay team won the ACC Championship with a school record time of 11:08.40.  The distance medley relay is a 4,000 meter race with each runner going a different distance.  Wake's team was made up of Amy Harding-Delooze running the opening 1200m, followed by Cydney Delley at 400m, Aleeya Hutchins at 800m and senior Johanna Schulz anchoring the squad by going the final 1600m.

"It was a thrilling win," said head coach John Hayes.  "We were back in the pack at one point but we had a great finish.  Johanna (Schulz) closed out the race while battling one of the top milers in the country."

Wake Forest edged Virginia Tech by .01.  The win marks the first ACC Championship in the DMR for the Wake Forest women since 2001.

Freshman Andrew White took fifth in the weight throw in his first ACC Championship.  White posted a season and personal-best 19.13m (62'9.25") throw.

"I was very pleased with Andrew's performance," said Hayes.  "He is still learning this event and his future is very exciting."

In the women's weight throw, Katrina Andreassen had her second-best throw of the season at 15.11m.

Anna Bush, who scored a school record 4,023 points in winning the pentathlon at the Queens University Multi-Events earlier this month, was forced to drop out of Thursday's pentathlon due to an injury.  Bush was in second place after three events and won the shot put despite being able to make just one of the three allotted throws.  The injury forced her out of the final two events, the long jump and the 800 meters.

"Anna was doing very well," said Hayes.  "She hurt her Achilles tendon during the high jump and she was only able to take one throw in the shot.  She was very upset but I'm proud of her for making it as far as she did."

Wake Forest's other pentathlon competitors, Brionne Pyles and Meghan O'Malley, each set a season-best in points during the event.

The ACC Championships continue Friday at the Loftus Sports Center before concluding on Saturday.
