This year marks the 45th anniversary of Wake Forest's 1975 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. GoDeacs.com will re-live that journey to the national championship by re-telling the story of each round on the corresponding date. The Deacons started on the road to the national title on June 25, 1975.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (June 27, 1975) – Wake Forest extended its team lead to six shots after the third round of the NCAA Golf Championships at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
Wake Forest posted a 291 team total for a 54-hole score of 872. Oklahoma State shot 294 and sits in second place at 878 followed by BYU at 884, Southern Cal at 886 and host Ohio State at 892.
Jay Haas is the third round leader after a 69 on day three. Haas is at 212 after 54 holes. Bob Byman and Curtis Strange are tied for seventh at 217. Byman fired a 73 in the third round and Strange shot a 74.
"I've been standing over my shots too long," said Haas. "I relaxed and sped it up today. That helped."
"I'm hitting the ball solid. I hit all but one green today. I just hope it continues tomorrow."
Haas took charge on the second nine, carding birdies at 10, 11, 14 and 15 before a bogey at 16, the only green he missed all day.
Haas has been the low amateur at the U.S. Open in each of the last two years.
"I'm playing lousy. He's playing just super," said Strange of his teammate Haas. "I hope he can take up the slack."
Wake Forest's David Thore cut four strokes of his second round score with a 74 on day three. Tim Saylor shot an 81.
Jerry Pate of Alabama had the day's low round at 68. Haas' 69 was matched only by Phil Hancock of Florida.
