SOUTHPORT, England – Wake Forest men's golfer Mark Power is making a run at one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the world.
The 125th Amateur Championship kicked off Thursday with one round of stroke play to cut the field from 120 to 64. Power finished T18 in the stroke play portion and won both his matches on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played Saturday.
Should he win his quarterfinals match, the semifinals will also be played Saturday with the championship match on Sunday, August 30.
"I got off to such a nice start, I was four-up after five, I made a couple of birdies in tough conditions. He came back at me really hard over the back nine and I just made a good birdie on 16 to get back to two-up," said Power.
"When you get to four up after five you start to relax a little bit but that is the one thing you can't do in match play and when your opponent starts playing a bit better, it's a strange position to be in. But I hung in out there, the wind was so tough, you have no choice but to play well or you will be in the hay.
"I feel like I am easing into it now. I have won every game 2&1 but every game is different, and I feel like I am ready for any challenge."
The Amateur Championship is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world and was first played in 1885 at Hoylake. The winner secures exemptions to The Open Championship and the US Open, and by tradition, an invitation to play in the Masters Tournament.
The championship has visited 22 locations throughout Great Britain and Ireland with Hoylake hosting the greatest number of times (18), followed by St Andrews (16), Royal St George's (14), Prestwick and Muirfield (both 11). In 2018 288 players from 38 countries across the world were represented at The Amateur Championship.
