MAMARONECK, New York – Former Demon Deacons Webb Simpson and Will Zalatoris wrapped up the 120th U.S. Open with top 10 finishes.
Zalatoris' T6 finish marks his twelfth consecutive top-20 finish since the Korn Ferry Tour restart in June. The T8 finish for Simpson is his fourth consecutive top-15 finish on the PGA Tour. It is also worth mentioning that Zalatoris, a full-time Korn Ferry Tour player, tied for sixth with Dustin Johnson, who won the 2020 FedEx Cup just a few weeks ago. Simpson tied with other tour staples Tony Finau and Justin Thomas, after Thomas led the field for the first two days.
Wake Forest is the only college in the country to have two former players finish in the top 10 of the U.S. Open this year.
"We're always proud of all our guys playing professional golf," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Will and Webb went out and played some great golf and stayed in the hunt all weekend. They always represent Wake Forest to the highest standard but it is a little special this week. Having them both finish inside the top 10 and to be able to give Wake Forest that recognition is a big deal for us, and a big deal for them. We are very proud to say they come from the Old Gold and Black. Go Deacs!"
A hole-in-one highlighted the first round for Zalatoris, who was the second player of the day to hit an ace on the par-3 seventh hole at Winged Foot. Simpson stayed consistent with an eagle on the ninth hole during the second round.
Consistency was the name of the game for both Deacs as Simpson shot a 71 for his first three rounds to keep him in contention. Zalatoris stayed in contention with a 70 in two of his rounds and a final-round 71.
