Men’s Soccer Opens Season with 3-1 Victory over Louisville

9/25/2020 8:51:00 PM | Men's Soccer

The Demon Deacons took a 2-0 lead into halftime before beating the Cardinals 3-1 in a non-conference meeting.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the fourth-straight season, Wake Forest men's soccer has opened a new campaign with a victory, as the Demon Deacons on Friday night defeated Louisville 3-1. The match was a non-conference meeting between the two ACC schools.

"After a layoff and an emotional week for the team, I couldn't be prouder of this group of young men," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "To go on the road in our first true match since last year, play and get experience for a ton of young guys and get a win is a great feeling. We also learned from this match, and know we have a ton of work to do if we want to be the team we expect to be. This group this early in the season has been dealt with adversity and challenges. I am excited about getting back to Wake and training and working on getting better and prepared for NC State."

Senior Machop Chol opened the scoring for Wake Forest in the fifth minute, taking a pass from sophomore Calvin Harris to beat Cardinals goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch. Harris would later double-up the first half lead, zig-zagging through Louisville's defense before burying a shot in the back of the net.

Louisville, however, cut into Wake's lead just two minutes into the second half, as Pedro Fonseca was on the receiving end of a free kick that went unmarked.

Despite the Cardinals' goal, Wake Forest would once again score when junior Kyle Holcomb -- who was fouled inside the box -- converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute.

Wake Forest now turns its attention to the home and conference opener next Saturday, when the Demon Deacons host NC State at Spry Stadium. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will air on ACCNX.
