Wake Forest opens the season with a 5-2 victory over the in-state 49ers.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 16 Wake Forest women's tennis team captured a 5-2 victory over Charlotte in the season opener on Monday afternoon.

The Demon Deacons (1-0) jumped out to an early lead winning the doubles point with the help of victories on court one and court two.

On court one, Brooke Killingsworth and Anna Brylin cruised to a 6-1 win to get Wake Forest ahead in the doubles point. In the No. 2 match, Anna Campana and Casie Wooten led nearly the entire way, closing out the doubles point, 7-5.

Brylin quickly put Wake Forest up 2-0, winning a convincing 6-1, 6-1 match in the No. 3 singles match over the 49ers' (0-2) Safont.

Maddie Lynch also finished out her victory in straight sets, winning the No. 6 match. After falling behind early in the first set, Lynch battled back to take the set, 7-5. She then controlled most of the second set en route to a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Killingsworth provided the clincher on court two. After dropping the opening set, the Rogers, Ark. native captured a 6-2 win in the second set and closed out the match with a 6-3 victory in the third to win the match.

Quotable:

"It was our first match. I told the team 'let's not be too nervous or too anxious about what we're doing. Let's just be happy to be out there.' We went out and did a good job of that. The doubles was very competitive. We knew they were going to be really good at two and three doubles and they were. I was happy when Mia and Peyton came back. They were down a triple, quadruple matchpoint and came back and forced that tiebreaker and that helped take the pressure off of second doubles. Eventually, we got that very important doubles point. Singles was a slow start in a lot of spots. Charlotte had played last week and we hadn't played. Our resolve was phenomenal. I'm proud of the group. We were a little short handed with missing a few players. This is a great group and this group that was here is better than they were 10 months ago, even without having played." - Coach Jeff Wyshner
