Deacs Head West for Arizona Intercollegiate
1/24/2021 11:19:00 AM | Men's Golf
Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team heads west to Tucson, Arizona this week for the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewailo Golf Club
Wake Forest is one of 17 teams competing, for a total field of 96 players. The Deacs are coming off a second-place finish by playoff at the Seminole Invitational last week in Florida. Wake shot 22-under and had four Deacs finish inside the top 20, with three of them inside the top five. Sophomore Mark Power led the Deacs, finishing in a tie for third.
Wake Forest was recently listed as the No. 9 team in the country and the top team in the ACC in the Golfweek Power Rankings. Junior Alex Fitzpatrick and Power were listed as the No. 14 and No. 16 players, respectively.
Course Information
The tournament is being played at the par 71, 7,292-yard Sewailo Golf Club at Casino del Sol. The course was ranked No. 13 by GOLFWEEK in their prestigious ranking of the Best Courses You Can Play in Arizona in 2019.
The course's name, Sewailo, means "flower world" in the Yaqui language. When the idea of creating the golf course was first formed, the tribe enlisted the help of fellow Native American and PGA Tour player Notah Begay III as well as renowned course architect Ty Butler. The team fully utilized the rugged landscape, crafting a championship layout with a range of shot values and a variety of hazards. The bunkering is minimal but strategic, added to complement the natural features rather than overpower them. There are also lakes and meandering streams that come into play throughout the course.
Format
54-hole stroke play where teams play three rounds over three days. Tee times will start at 11:00 a.m. ET on Monday morning from holes 1 and 10. The second round will be Tuesday, and the event will conclude with the final 18 holes on Wednesday.

Power spent all of 2020 training at home in Ireland and competing in amateur and professional tournaments on the European circuit, which included a semifinal run at The R&A Amateur Championship in August. He also went into a playoff at the English Men's Open Stroke Play Championship that same month. In his first event back with the Deacs last week, Power led the team finishing in a tie for third and a final score of seven-under 209.
