Freshman Casie Wooten provides the clinching point for the Demon Deacons, who are set to face the winner of NC State and Northwestern on Monday.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 16 Wake Forest women's tennis team captured a ranked victory over No. 18 UCF, 4-3, in the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend in Raleigh, N.C.
With the match tied 3-3, freshman Casie Wooten on court five was the only game left unfinished. She jumped out to an early lead with a 6-3 win in the opening frame before UCF's Leslie came back to force a third set.
The third set was tight throughout, being tied 4-4 before Wooten was able to close it out at the end. She pulled out the 7-5 set three win to clinch the match for the Demon Deacons.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Killingsworth and Brylin picked up a big win in the No. 1 doubles match, knocking off the No. 6-ranked doubles pairing in the country. They were the first to finish, winning 6-3, but UCF (0-1) went on to claim the next two matches to take the doubles point.
The Demon Deacons (2-0) responded quickly in singles play. For the second time in as many matches this season, Anna Brylin dominated her singles match on court three. She captured a fast 6-1 win in the first and closed out the match in the second with a 6-3 victory.
In the No. 1 singles match, Anna Campana faced No. 67 Zeleva. Campana led nearly the entire way en route to a 6-4, 7-6 win over the nationally-ranked player.
Killingsworth nearly picked up the first ranked win of her career in the No. 2 match. The freshman won the opener 6-4 and batted closely with No. 42-ranked Stolmar before Stolmar narrowly came back to win in three sets.
At that point, the match was 3-2 in favor of UCF.
Minutes later, Maddie Lynch improved to 2-0 on the season with a straight-set win on court six, winning 6-2, 6-3 to tie up the match at 3-3.
Quotable:
"That was a great college tennis match. The Individual matches just kept swinging back and forth, and none more than a great third set for Casie in the deciding match. We lost a close doubles point even though Anya and Brooke dominated No. 1 doubles. Anna and Anya were great and on just four courts guaranteed us the opportunity to get Maddie and Casie on the court. Maddie was just phenomenal in knotting the score at 3-3. That put Casie in position to just will her way through an incredibly tough match. It was a really gritty effort. It is so exciting to see that type of tenacity this early in the season." - Coach Jeff Wyshner
