No. 15 Demon Deacons Drop Conference Contest to No. 10 Tar Heels

10/15/2021 8:43:00 PM | Field Hockey

Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Glaister made a career-high eight goals in her 16th-straight start.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -  The No. 15 Wake Forest (5-7, 1-4 ACC) field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 10 North Carolina (9-5, 2-2 ACC) on Friday night at Kentner Stadium.

The lone goal on the night came from the Tar Heels at the 12-minute mark. Over the next 48 minutes of game action, both teams battled for possession as the Demon Deacons' defense continued to impress, holding their fourth-straight opponent to two goals or less. Additionally, Wake Forest has kept opponents under two goals or less in 10 of their 12 matches in 2021.

Sophomore goalie Tori Glaister made a career-high eight saves, five of which came in the final 26 minutes of action. Her previous high was seven stops against North Carolina on April 23, 2021 in the ACC Automatic Qualifier game.

This season, Glaister has made at least three saves in nine of Wake Forest's 12 matches.

How It Happened

  • Tori Glaister tallied her first save on the first shot of the match at the 12-minute mark by North Carolina.

  • A minute and a half later, North Carolina found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

  • Brooke McCusker recorded Wake Forest's first shot of the afternoon at the 14:42 mark of the first period.

  • Two minutes into the second period, Wake Forest received the first penalty corner opportunity by either team as Hannah Maxwell served as the inserter.

  • McCusker also logged the Demon Deacons' opening shot of the second period just moments later (23:38 mark), but it was blocked.

  • Less than a minute and a half into the second half, Nat Friedman fired the first shot by either squad, but it skied over the North Carolina goal.

  • Glaister picked up back-to-back saves in the 35th minute, preventing North Carolina from adding to their lead.

    • The London, England, native would ultimately set a career-high in saves with eight, surpassing her seven-save effort against North Carolina in the ACC's Automatic Qualifier match in the spring.

Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "That was a typical, tight Wake Forest and North Carolina game, although the statistics probably don't show that. I don't think they ever got in a tempo. I don't think we ever got in a tempo.

You're zero-one against a very quality team. Literally, with seven minutes left, with two minutes left, I thought, 'We could pull this off. We can tie it up.' More work and hopefully we can get a better result."
