Fitzpatrick Helps Lead Late Deacs Charge in Day One of Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate

10/22/2021 5:29:00 PM | Men's Golf

Senior Alex Fitzpatrick carded an opening round 64 (-8) and is one off the lead after 18 holes of play in Alpharetta, Ga.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Senior Alex Fitzpatrick led the Wake Forest men's golf team in the opening round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Friday afternoon.

After sitting 2-under and inside of the top 15 at the turn, Fitzpatrick led the Demon Deacon charge on the final nine holes of the opening round. As a team, Wake Forest was 10-under-par over the last nine to surge up the leaderboard.

In total, the Deacs rose eight spots with the help of their late push and currently sit in seventh place on the team leaderboard. All four of the Demon Deacons' counting scores were at or below par during this stretch of holes. Wake Forest sits just eight strokes off the lead with 36 holes to play this weekend.

Fitzpatrick himself was 6-under-par during that stretch, sparked by an eagle on the par-5 first. The senior from Sheffield, England is in search of his second individual tournament victory of the season after sharing co-medalist honors with teammate Michael Brennan at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational. Additionally, it could be his third collegiate victory overall. He is one off the lead after with 36 holes remaining in the tournament.

Freshman Marshall Meisel continues his impressive start to his collegiate career, carding the Demon Deacons other under-par round on Friday. Meisel, a Chevy Chase, Md. native, finished the round 1-under-par and is currently tied for 26th on the individual leaderboard.

The Demon Deacons will tee off their second round of play on Saturday at 10:50 a.m., playing alongside TCU and Clemson off hole one.

From Coach Haas:

"It was a very nice recovery today. We were last at one time at six over and flipped it around to shoot 5-under. It was a wonderful round by Alex and a solid round by Marshall. We're off hole number one tomorrow which makes a difference and we should be able to get out of the gate and shoot a good round."
