Demon Deacons Look for Best Start Since 2008-09 Against Oregon State

11/25/2021 4:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team will face their first high-major opponent of the season against Oregon State on Friday evening in the second round of the Emerald Coast Classic on the campus of Northwest Florida State in Niceville, Fla.

The tournament will serve as a homecoming for Head Coach Steve Forbes, who continued his head coaching career with Northwest Florida State in 2011. In his two seasons as coach of the Raiders, Forbes compiled a 62-6 record, twice reached the JUCO national title game, and never lost a game in Raider Arena.

The Demon Deacons (5-0) are coming off five straight double-digit victories at home to start the season, and most recently defeated Kennesaw State by a margin of 92-61 on Tuesday.

At least three players have scored in double-digits in each of the five victories, and three players are averaging double-digit points per game: Alondes Williams (19.4 - fourth in the ACC), Daivien Williamson (15.0) and Jake LaRavia (14.2).

Wake Forest has had historic starts to the season on both ends of the floor. The Demon Deacons currently rank fifth in the country in field goal percentage at 53.6 percent and have shot 50 percent or better from the field in each of their first five games for the first time in the 21st century.

On the other end, Wake Forest has held four of its first five opponents to sub-40 percent shooting for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Additionally, the Demon Deacons currently lead the ACC in steals per game, at 11.0.

The Beavers (1-4) are coming off an 80-81 loss to Princeton last Sunday and are led by eighth-year coach Wayne Tinkle. Last year's Oregon State team won the Pac-12 Tournament and put together an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight for the first time since 1982 before falling to Houston.

Tipoff in Raider Arena is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET and the game will air live on CBS Sports Network.

Fans can follow along via the Demon Deacons Twitter and Instagram accounts (@WakeMBB).

Standout Stats
Through the first five games of the season Alondes Williams has scored 97 points, which is tied for the third most points scored the first five games of a season by any Demon Deacon in the 21st century:
    C.J. Harris: 97, 11-12 season
