Deacs Ready to Take on Coastal Carolina in Midweek Clash

Wake Forest jumps back into action in their fourth non-conference game of the season.

Game Notes

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 17 Wake Forest continues their 11-game home stand on Tuesday, with a midweek contest against Coastal Carolina at David F. Couch Ballpark.

The Deacs (2-1) will look to build on their season opening series win over Northeastern, as the Chanticleers (1-2) look to rebound from their opening season series loss to Duke. 

First pitch is set for 4 p.m ET. Fans can catch the game on ACC Network Extra, or stream the radio broadcast live through the Wake Forest Athletics app.

Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons dominated at the plate against Northeastern, scoring 28 runs across three games against the Huskies to earn the series win. The Deacs slashed .312/.424/.486 as a team in the opening series, while holding Northeastern to just a .282/.339/.373 line on the mound. 

Sophomore Michael Turconi registered a team-high average of .455 at the plate through three games. The middle infielder batted second in the lineup out of the DH slot, tallying five RBIs and scoring four runs in 11 at-bats. 

Junior Shane Muntz leads the Deacs in On-Base Percentage and OPS, getting on base at .571 clip and slugging .667 for an OPS of 1.238. The junior backstop had a grand slam in the season opener that powered Wake Forest to an 8-6 win. 

The Demon Deacon pitching staff has compiled a 3.33 ERA through the first three games. Wake Forest struck out 37 batters while walking just nine, good for a K/BB ratio of 4.11. 

Chanticleer Preview
Coastal Carolina is coming off a series loss to Duke, falling in their season opener on Saturday before splitting a double header on Sunday. The Chanticleers are led at the plate by Parker Chavers, Alex Gattinelli, and Nick Lucky. Individually, the trio hit over .300, slugged over .700, and each blasted a home run in the team's opening series, most notably Chavers' walk-off grand slam in Coastal Carolina's 8-7 victory on Sunday. 

The Coastal Carolina pitching staff earned a 6.67 ERA in their three-game series, but held the Blue Devils to just a .272 batting average. The Chanticleers struck out 30 batters while walking 18.  

Opponent & Series History
Tuesday will mark the 41st matchup between Coastal Carolina and Wake Forest. The Deacs trail in the all-time series 23-17. The two institutions first played in 1977, with Wake Forest splitting a pair of games on the road in Conway, S.C.

Coastal Carolina was the final team Wake Forest faced in the 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic postponed and later canceled the rest of the season. The Deacs fell to the Chanticleers 10-4 on March 11, 2020. Scott Kobos, current Chicago Cubs farmhand, earned the win for Coastal, while Cole McNamee took the loss for Wake Forest. 

On Deck
Wake Forest opens up Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend with a three-game set against Notre Dame. The Feb 26-28 series will be shown entirely on ACC Network Extra, with Friday and Saturday's games starting at 4 p.m. ET and Sunday's at 1 p.m. ET.
