Men’s Soccer Opens Spring with 1-0 Shutout of Davidson

3/1/2021 8:41:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Jahlane Forbes’ 75th-minute goal in first career start secures the Deacs’ third non-conference win this season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Back on the pitch for the team's first official game since November, Wake Forest men's soccer notched a 1-0 win over Davidson on Monday night at Spry Stadium.

In his first career start, Jahlane Forbes notched the game-winning goal in the 75th-minute, taking a perfectly placed pass from Jake Swallen to beat Davidson goalkeeper Giacomo Piccardo.

Wake Forest (8-2-0) dominated throughout the contest, holding possession for 65 percent of the game. The Deacs held the Wildcats (0-2-0) to just four total shots, while tallying 12 of their own.

Cole McNally earned the shutout in his first career start between the posts. The Mount Airy, Md. native only needed three saves to keep the Wildcats off the scoresheet.

The match marked the only scheduled non-conference competition in the spring for Wake Forest.

How It Happened

  • The Deacs threatened in the third minute with a free kick just outside the corner of the 18-yard box, but Omar Hernandez's cross was cleared away.

  • Forbes set up a quick counter-attack that led to a corner kick in the sixth minute, but Hernandez's cross was once again cleared in the box by a Wildcat header.

  • The match remained 0-0 at halftime.

    • Wake Forest dominated defensively through the first half, holding Davidson to just three shots (two on-goal) and zero corners.

  • The Deacs earned their first corner of the second half in the 55th minute, but Jake Swallen's kick was deflected away.

  • Hernandez got a shot on-goal in the 60th minute, firing a screamer outside the box that the Wildcat keeper secured.

  • Kyle Holcomb followed with a break away chance in the 72nd minute from the right of the box, but late Wildcat pressure pushed the shot wide of the near post.

  • Wake Forest would break the scoreless tie in the 75th minute, as Jahlane Forbes slotted home a goal into the bottom right corner off a terrific through ball from Swallen.

Demon Deacon Details Of Note

  • Cole McNally and Jahlane Forbes made their first career starts in the contest.

  • Justin McMaster also made his first start since Nov. 13, 2019. McMaster -- who was selected in the first round of the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota United -- is currently the only senior on Wake Forest's roster.

  • Forbes' 75th minute winner was also his first career goal.

  • Ryan Fessler made his collegiate debut in the contest, playing 18 minutes.

  • With the victory, head coach Bobby Muuss has 97 career wins as head coach of the Demon Deacons.

  • The victory pushes Wake Forest's non-conference record this season to 3-0-0.

  • Wake Forest has now won 21-straight contests against Davidson dating back to Oct. 2, 1998.

  • The Demon Deacons are now 34-3-2 in non-conference games played in Winston-Salem under Muuss.

Muuss' Musing
"I'm happy just to be able to play a game right back at Spry. Obviously, the first game back in a long time. It wasn't as pretty as you want it to be. But we grinded it out. I thought we did exactly what we wanted to do. I wanted to keep a clean sheet in the first half for sure, and then try to wear down Davidson. And I thought we did that. They got deeper and deeper and deeper, and finally we broke through. Really good run from Jahlane, in a new position for him. So I'm extremely proud of the young guys."

Up Next

The Demon Deacons will be back at Spry Stadium next Saturday for a scheduled contest against Boston College. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and be televised on ACC Network Extra.

Wake Forest has won its last three home games against Boston College, which started with a 4-1 victory on Oct. 17, 2014.
