Deacs Drop Road Contest at No. 5 Miami

3/12/2021 11:00:00 PM | Baseball

Wake Forest returned to the diamond on Friday night for their first road game of 2021.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Wake Forest fell to No. 5 Miami 10-0 on Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field in their first road contest of the season.

The Deacs (3-5, 1-3 ACC) found themselves deadlocked in a scoreless, defensive battle with the Hurricanes (7-4, 4-3 ACC) through the first two and a half innings.

After Miami scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third, the Hurricanes used seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings as a springboard to clinch the series opener.

Both Wake Forest's hits were doubles down the left field line by Bobby Seymour (fourth inning) and Cole McNamee (eighth inning). Additionally, Seymour and Brock Wilken also reached base after being walked in the top of the second inning.

William Fleming (1-1) made his third start on the mound for the Deacs and pitched 5.0 innings, striking out four batters while allowing six runs on six hits.

Teddy McGraw and McName both pitched in relief, combining for five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of action.

In the top of the seventh inning, Brendan Tinsman made his first appearance of the new season as a pinch hitter and played behind the plate for the remainder of the game.

How It Happened

  • After the Deacs were retired without a hit in the top of the first, William Fleming started out hot, sitting down the Canes three up, three down to begin his third start of the season.

  • Bobby Seymour and Brock Wilken both walked to begin the top of the second frame, but the inning ended after the next three batters were set down.

  • After the Hurricanes reached on an error, Fleming sat down the next three batters (two strikeouts and a fly-out) to keep the game scoreless heading into the third.

  • Miami struck first in the bottom of the third, knocking in the first base hit of the evening with two outs to take a 1-0 lead. Fleming forced the next batter to fly-out to end the inning.

  • Seymour doubled, his second of the season, and advanced to third to threaten the Hurricanes' advantage in the top of the fourth. Miami got out of the inning after retiring the next two Deacs.

  • Fleming continued to deal in his fourth frame of work, forcing a groundout, fly-out and his fourth strikeout to hold the Canes' advantage at 1-0.

  • After a scoreless top half for Wake Forest, Miami plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0. The Canes scored runs on a wild pitch, a two-run double and a two-run homerun.

  • Fleming ended his night after 5.0 innings, giving up six earned runs on six hits.

  • Teddy McGraw made his fourth appearance in relief of the season in the bottom of the sixth. The Canes extended their lead to 8-0 after their second two-run shot of the night.

  • In the top of the seventh, Brendan Tinsman was called on as a pinch-hitter for his first appearance of the 2021 campaign. He stayed in and played behind home plate for the remainder of the game.

  • With nobody out, a RBI single added a run to the Miami advantage (9-0) in the bottom half of the inning. After the run, McGraw struck out two straight batters and forced a ground out to retire the side.

  • Cole McNamee led off the top of the eighth with his first double of the season to jump into scoring position. Lucas Costello also reached base in the inning after being hit by a pitch.
  • McNamee hit the mound in the bottom half of the inning, his fifth pitching appearance of 2021.

  • After Miami scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, the Deacs ultimately fell to the Hurricanes by a final score of 10-0.

Words from Walter
"William (Fleming) threw the ball okay tonight and ran out of gas a little there. (We) had a chance to get out of that inning with two outs, and Adrian Del Castillo hit the big two-strike double. Probably should have called a different pitch there. That's on me.

We just hung a fastball in that situation and got to 4-0, and then didn't execute another pitch, and all of a sudden two bad pitches and it became 6-0 in a hurry. I feel like if we can make a better pitch there and keep it 2-0 and then go to (Brennen) Oxford, it probably changes the last half of that game."

On Deck
The Deacs and Hurricanes continue their series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in Coral Gables before wrapping up the three-game set on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be available on ACC Network Extra.
