No. 5 Miami Takes Game Two over Wake Forest, 6-3

3/13/2021 10:24:00 PM | Baseball

Despite the Deacs' two home runs and trio of doubles, the Hurricanes claimed the second game of the series.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Wake Forest dropped its second game to No. 5 Miami by a final score of 6-3 under the lights on Saturday at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

After falling behind 1-0, the Deacs (3-6, 1-4 ACC) scored the next three runs in the game thanks to home runs by Bobby Seymour (solo) and Brock Wilken (two-run shot) to take control of a 3-1 lead heading into the middle of the sixth.

Miami (8-4, 5-3 ACC) responded over the next three frames, plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth before adding a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to ultimately claim the win.

In addition to his solo homer, Seymour added one of Wake Forest's three doubles to lead the Deacs offensively. The St. John, Ind. native is now just 23 hits away from becoming the 28th Demon Deacon to record 200 hits over the course of their collegiate careers.

Chris Lanzilli and Michael Turconi joined Seymour with their extra-base hits, while Wilken's home run marked his fourth of his freshman campaign, good for a team-best.

Rhett Lowder made his second-career start on Saturday night, striking out six Hurricane batters while giving up three earned runs in 5.1 innings. After the first inning, the Albemarle, N.C. native found his groove, recording all six of his strikeouts over the next four innings while only allowing two hits.

Hunter Furtado, Brennen Oxford, Camden Minacci and Eric Adler all pitched 0.2 innings in relief, combining for three strikeouts while only allowing three hits.

How It Happened

  • The Hurricanes struck first, plating the opening run of the game after a leadoff double to gain an early 1-0 advantage. Michael Turconi turned a double-play after a line out to end the first inning of freshman Rhett Lowder's second career start.

  • Bobby Seymour rocketed a ball over the center field wall to tie the game at 1 heading into the bottom of the second.

    • This marked Seymour's first homer of the season and the 18th of his career.

  • After Lowder allowed a lead-off single, the Albemarle, N.C. native induced a strikeout, a fly-out and picked off the Miami baserunner to end the inning.

  • The Deacs tallied a hitless third and fourth inning at the plate. Over those same innings, Lowder was dealing.

    • Lowder got himself out of the third inning with a strikeout after allowing a double with two outs (strikeout and groundout).

    • In the fourth, Lowder walked the opening Hurricanes' batter. The next at-bat, Wilken caught a line-drive and tossed the ball to first for Wake Forest's second double play of the game.

  • In the fifth, Lowder increased his strikeout total to six, fanning the final pair of Miami batters.

  • Wake Forest's bats came alive and scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth after sprinkling in a pair of doubles and a two-run home run courtesy of Brock Wilken with two outs.

    • Micheal Turconi knocked in his fourth double of the season to right field to get on base.

    • Wilken's team-high fourth home run of his freshman campaign brought Turconi home.

    • Bobby Seymour registered his second double of the series. The Deacs' threat was ended after McNamee was retired.

  • The Hurricanes answered with three runs of their own, a two-run shot and a solo homer, to retake the lead (4-3) heading into the seventh. Lowder was replaced by fellow freshman Hunter Furtade after the opening batter.

    • Lowder pitched 5.1 innings, striking out six while giving up three runs on five hits.

  • Chris Lanzilli knocked in Wake Forest's third two-bagger of the night as the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Brendan Tinsman, who made his first start of the season, joined Lanzilli on base after being hit by a pitch. The Deacs were unable to capitalize on the scoring threat after two strikeouts and a fielder's choice.

  • Brennen Oxford opened up on the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning and forced two outs before being replaced by Camden Minacci. The Canes scored on a wild pitch to increase their lead to 5-3 heading into the eighth.

  • After a three up, three down half inning for Wake Forest, Miami plated another run to add to their lead and closed the door on the Deacs in the ninth to claim a 6-3 victory.

In the Spotlight
Bobby Seymour strung together his best performance of 2021 on Saturday night, tallying his second multi-hit game of the season. The four-year starter put Wake Forest on the board in the second inning with his solo shot to right center, his first homer of the season and the 18th of his career.

After tallying a trio of hits against Miami, Seymour continues to inch towards history. The St. Johns, Ind. native is now just 23 hits away from becoming the 28th player in program history to reach the 200-hit mark in their collegiate career.

Words from Walter
"Obviously pleased with Rhett Lowder's start. He really only made two bad pitches on the day. He hung a change-up to (Jordan) Lala in the first inning for a double, and then hung a change-up to (Anthony) Vilar in the sixth inning for the home run. He had Lala 1-2, and ended up walking him there in the sixth inning. It was a big at-bat, big situation in the game. I knew I wanted to go to (Hunter) Furtado there, or (Brennen) Oxford even, but maybe stuck with Rhett a little longer than I should have. But we were hoping to play tomorrow, so I was trying to get them a little deeper into the game.

Good to see Bobby Seymour get going a little bit today. Hopefully as we continue to get healthier and a little deeper in the season, we can start to put it together and stack some quality at-bats together. We really still haven't done that as a team."

On Deck
Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday against non-conference foe Charlotte at David F. Couch Ballpark. The game is slated for 4:00 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network.
