Junior Alex Fitzpatrick took home the individual title by three strokes.
Palm City, Fla. - With the help of three players inside of the top 15, the Wake Forest men's golf team finished the Valspar Collegiate in second place, four strokes off the winner.
The Demon Deacons were led by junior Alex Fitzpatrick, who led the field for most of the event. With a 12-under score of 201, Fitzpatrick took home his first collegiate title and fifth top five finish of his career. He carded scores of 67, 66, and 68 with a bogey-free final round.
With the win, Fitzpatrick earned an exemption into The Valspar Championship, a PGA event scheduled for April 28-May 2 at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tampa, Florida.
Freshman BJ Rogillio had his best outing in the Black and Gold, coming in with his first top 15 finish. After a bogey on his second hole of the final round, Rogillio made six birdies over 16 holes to secure his spot on the leaderboard at T14. Five of those birdies came on the second nine, including two on his final four holes of the day.
Sophomore Mark Power became the fourth Deac to record an eagle on the par-3 13th hole in his final round. Power finished the tournament T16 with a one-under score of 212. Senior Parker Gillam finished T36 and freshman Michael Brennan rounded out the lineup at T48.
Senior Marco Steyn competed as an individual and finished T57.
Coach's Comments
"Today was a windy tough day but they hung in well. I wish we could have gotten a couple holes back but a coach can never complain at 17-under. We know what we need to work on and will continue to improve. Each week there's a new person in front for us and that's what makes this team special.
It's really cool for Alex, his first collegiate win, and he earned an exemption to The Valspar. So we're very proud of him and happy to see his hard work pay off." - head coach Jerry Haas
