Demon Deacons Drop Top-30 Clash at Miami

3/26/2021 3:24:00 PM | Women's Tennis

The No. 26 Wake Forest women’s tennis program will look to rebound Sunday against No. 40 Old Dominion.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In a match between two top-30 teams, the No. 26 Wake Forest women's tennis team fell at No. 29 Miami on Friday afternoon, 7-0.

Heading into the match, the Demon Deacons (9-7, 5-4 ACC) were in search of just their second victory all-time in Coral Gables.

Despite eventually dropping the doubles point to Miami (9-5, 6-3 ACC), Wake Forest had a strong showing in doubles play. It was a battle of two top-25 doubles teams in the No. 1 match with Eliza Omirou and Carolyn Campana nearly coming all the way from back to take the victory. They eventually fell, 6-4.

In the No. 2 match facing off with the No. 37 doubles team in the country, Casie Wooten and Brooke Killingsworth held their own and were on the precipice of a big victory as they were up 5-4 before the match went unfinished.

In singles play, Omirou, who moved up one position on Friday to the No. 4 position, nearly came back in the third set to pick up a point for the Demon Deacons. After winning the opening frame, 6-2, Urrutia of Miami evened the match at a set a piece.

In the third set tie break the game tightened with Omirou falling, 10-7, in the final singles match of the day.

Quotable

"It was a tough match today in Miami. We were in good positions late in sets, but Miami played those ninth, 10th and even 11th games of the set better than we did. We have to take something from today's match and build into our last five regular-season contests." - Coach Wyshner
