Demon Deacons Fall To No. 40 Old Dominion

Freshman Casie Wooten grabs a singles victory as the No. 26 Wake Forest women’s tennis team drops just its second home match of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a match between two top-40 teams, the No. 26 Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped just its second home match of the season against No. 40 Old Dominion, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Despite being without two of their three ranked singles players, the Demon Deacons (9-8, 5-4 ACC) battled the Monarchs (8-4, 0-0 C-USA) closely throughout the afternoon.

After dropping the doubles point, the Deacs showed their resilience early in singles play with Peyton Pesavento, Casie Wooten and Eliza Omirou each picking up first-set wins. After a swift 6-1 second set win by No. 32 ranked Anna Campana on court one, the momentum seemed to be in the Demon Deacons favor.

Unfortunately, Wake Forest only managed one singles victory, coming from Wooten in the No. 4 match. Her 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win marked the fourth in the last five singles matches for the freshman from Torrance, Calif.

When the match was clinched by Old Dominion, both Omirou and Peyton Pesavento looked as though they were on their way to third set victories. Omirou led No. 53 ranked Sasnouskaya, 4-3, in the third set while Pesavento was also up, 4-2, in the No. 5 match.

Quotable

"It was a tough match today. Old Dominion was a top-25 team last year and brought everyone back, so we knew playing them at any time this year was going to be really difficult. We battled in the singles after a tough doubles point as we've had to shift all three doubles teams around due to Carolyn and Anya being out. We had the lead at the other two matches that didn't finish, but credit to their fifth-year senior getting the job done in the final set at the top spot after Anna stepped up and pushed that match to the third set." - Coach Wyshner
