Despite a 3-1 lead, No. 14 Wake Forest lost 4-3 on the road to No. 13 ranked UCF.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 14 Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped a tough road match at No. 13 ranked UCF Wednesday afternoon at USTA Nationals Campus.
UCF (13-3, 2-0 AAC) started off the match by taking the doubles point on courts one and two. Siddhant Banthia and Matthew Thomson were left unfinished leading 5-4.
After UCF took the 1-0 lead, the Demon Deacons (21-5, 8-1 ACC) rebounded in singles play by picking up a straight set win from Eduardo Nava, knotting the score up at 1-1 with five singles matches remaining. That win is his seventh-straight in singles.
The Old Gold and Black claimed the lead with Banthia and Rrezart Cungu picking up straight-set wins, giving the Demon Deacons the 3-1 lead.
Despite extremely hard-fought efforts, Melios Efstathiou, Taha Baadi and Henri Squire dropped three-set-matches which ultimately completed the comeback win for UCF.
Quotable:
"Today was a battle of two teams that were hot. It was the worst doubles we have played so credit to UCF. They came out and played really well. I thought we started singles strong winning five of the six first sets. We had a few opportunities to finish it out, but we didn't take advantage of them. It was hot but I didn't think that played a factor in the loss. I think it was more of the fact how well UCF played. I think it was good we got to play out here with the National Championships being held here." - Coach Bresky
