Despite a late comeback, No. 12 Wake Forest lost 4-3 at home to No. 2 ranked Baylor.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 12 Wake Forest men's tennis lost a tough home match versus No. 2 ranked Baylor Thursday afternoon at Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Baylor (15-2) started off the match by taking the doubles point despite hard-fought efforts by Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons (11-4, 3-1 ACC) secured a win from Melios Efstathiou and Taha Baadi to avoid the doubles sweep.
After Baylor took the 1-0 lead, they kept the strong play going by picking up a straight-set win versus Eduardo Nava, advancing their lead to 2-0 with five singles matches remaining.
The Old Gold and Black continued to fight and picked up a straight-set win (6-4, 6-3) from Siddhant Banthia to cut the deficit to one. The Demon Deacons proceeded to drop another match, but immediately reeled in another win from #107 Taha Baadi to keep the match within striking distance, 3-2 in favor of Baylor.
Despite an extremely hard fought effort, Rrezart Cungu dropped a three-set-match which ultimately clinched the win for Baylor with one contest to go. After Baylor secured the victory, Henri Squire scored a huge comeback, posting a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win versus No. 46 Adrian Boitan to conclude the match at 4-3.
Quotable:
"Obviously, disappointed in the result. Not the result we wanted. Credit to Baylor, they came up big in the big moments there on a couple courts. We had our chances in doubles, but credit to their No. 5 guy who played great at the end of the match.
On the positive side, we saw a lot of improvement from Sunday. We had our poorest performance of the year Sunday, and the boys battled hard and learned alot from it. It's still early in the outdoor season, and we're getting better, so we're looking forward to Boston College on Sunday." - Coach Bresky
