Wake Forest Downs Boston College in Spring Season Opener

3/6/2021 2:06:00 PM | Field Hockey

Hannah Maxwell scored a pair of goals and Tori Glaister earned her first-career win in the cage on Saturday afternoon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Following a fast start from Wake Forest with a goal in the first quarter from sophomore Nat Friedman and a pair of second half scores from rookie Hannah Maxwell, the Demon Deacons (4-8, 1-0 ACC) defeated Boston College (1-4, 0-1 ACC), 3-0, to open their spring season at Kentner Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Maxwell is the first Demon Deacon to record a pair of goals in a game since her classmate Grace Delmotte did so on Nov. 1, 2020 against Boston College.

Additionally, Eleanor Winants posted a hat trick, assisting on the trio of Wake Forest goals to give the junior forward a new career-best.

Freshman Tori Glaister (1-4) did an outstanding job for the Deacons in the cage as she notched a career-high tying six saves.

Saturday marked the Deacons first shutout over an ACC opponent since Oct. 20, 2017 when Wake Forest did so against Boston College at Kentner Stadium.

Overall for the match, Wake Forest held the advantage in shots (20-13) and shots on goal (13-6) to earn the 3-0 victory.

The Deacs return to Kentner Stadium next Saturday as the team plays host to reigning national champion North Carolina at noon. The contest will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and Kentner Stadium will host a limited number of student-athlete families, Wake Forest students and University faculty and staff  for the game.

How It Happened

  • After a few possessions with no shots, Wake Forest scored on its first attempt on Saturday afternoon as sophomore Nat Friedman found the back of the cage off a pass from Eleanor Winants. The goal marked Friedman's fourth score and Winants fourth assist of the season.

  • The remainder of the first quarter had just one shot which was registered by Boston College's Margo Carlin who missed high.

  • Due to an obstruction by Boston College with 8:36 remaining in the first half, a score-evening goal from BC's Fusine Govaert was taken off the board to keep the Deacons in the lead.

    • Prior to the shot from Govaert, Wake Forest rookie goalkeeper Tori Glaister recorded her first save of the spring.

  • Wake Forest and Boston College traded shots throughout the remainder of the half, but the Deacons entered intermission with the lead, 1-0.

  • The Deacons were led by freshman Hannah Maxwell in the second half as she scored a goal with 10:23 left in the third quarter and with 12:14 remaining in the fourth. Both scores were assisted  by Winants.

  • Freshman Tori Glaister did yeoman's work in the cage with four second-half saves and career-high tying six for the contest. The victory was the first of her career.

In The Spotlight
While rookie Hannah Maxwell scored the first two goals of her career in the second half, junior forward Eleanor Winants dished out a career-high three assists, the most by a Demon Deacon since Veerle Bos recorded four in a 7-0 victory against Davidson on Oct. 28, 2018.

Quotable - Head Coach Jennifer Averill
"Out of the gate we put Boston College under the pump. I was really impressed with our composure today. We had some brilliant and beautiful goals. To play this strong this early is really nice. I am extremely proud of how we shared the ball today. It was a solid performance by all lines. It was great to see our young players get some minutes, play well and be a part of our success."
