Deacs Shutout Mountaineers in Dominant Midweek Victory

4/13/2021 10:16:00 PM | Baseball

Wake Forest pushed across 12 runs while throwing seven hitless frames on Tuesday.

BOONE, N.C. - Wake Forest dominated with an all-around team performance on Tuesday night, securing a 12-0 shutout victory over non-conference foe Appalachian State at Bill and Bettie Smith Stadium in Boone, N.C.

The Deacs (11-15, 5-12 ACC) controlled the entire midweek contest behind five different arms on the mound, holding the Mountaineers (13-15, 6-3 Sun Belt) without a base hit over the final five frames of game action to register their second shutout of the 2021 season. Overall, Wake Forest matched their season-low total of two hits allowed (Georgia Tech, March 20).

Reed Mascolo led the charge on the hill, picking up his second win of the season after striking out five Mountaineers while only allowing two hits and zero walks. Crawford Wade, Teddy McGraw, Cole McNamee and Seth Keener continued Mascolo's momentum into the latter innings, each throwing one hitless frame while combining for six strikeouts.

Home runs from Bobby Seymour and Brendan Tinsman early in the game boosted a Wake Forest offense that exploded in the fifth inning, plating seven runs to jump out to a 9-0 lead. Chris Lanzilli capped off the frame with a historic grand slam, while the Deacs also scored runs with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. The final trio of runs were earned thanks to RBI base hits from Seymour and Lucas Costello and a bases-loaded walk.

Costello led Wake Forest at the plate with three hits. Seymour continued to stay hot, knocking in two hits with three RBIs and three runs scored. Adam Cecere walked a team-high two times as the Deacs earned bases on balls 10 times as a team.

How It Happened
  • After the top of Wake Forest's lineup was set down in order, Reed Mascolo tossed a scoreless opening frame, including his first strikeout.
  • Bobby Seymour got the Deacs on the scoreboard with a solo shot to center in the top of the second, giving the team a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
  • Mascolo tossed a perfect second inning, preserving Wake Forest's 1-0 lead.
  • The Deacs added a run to their lead in the third thanks to a deep laser over the left field wall from Brendan Tinsman.
    • Jake Reinisch smacked his first collegiate hit and Lucas Costello extended his hitting streak with a single to center field in the frame.
  • Mascolo continued to deal, pitching his second-consecutive perfect inning.
    • The righty threw his second strikeout in the frame.
  • The Mountaineers retired Wake Forest in order in the top half of the fourth.
  • The Deacs kept Appalachian State off the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame after a double with two outs. Mascolo fanned his third and fourth Mountaineers during the inning.
  • Wake Forest broke the game open in the fifth, plating seven runs behind a Chris Lanzilli grand slam and three RBI-walks.
    • The Deacs loaded the bases with one out with Adam Cecere (walk), Tinsman (single) and Costello (walked). Michael Turconi and Brock Wilken were walked back-to-back, followed by Seymour being hit by a pitch to plate the third run before the homer from Lanzilli.
  • Mascolo retired the Mountaineers in order for his third three up, three down inning of his start.
    • Mascolo struck out his fifth batter in his final frame of work.
  • Costello doubled to right center field with two outs in the sixth, but the Deacs were unable to tack on to their lead after a ground out to first base.
  • Crawford Wade took over the pitching duties in the bottom half, striking out a Mountaineer to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.
  • Wake Forest tacked on three runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 12-0. Seymour got the scoring started with a RBI-double to deep center field, scoring Parker Pilat, who pinch ran for Wilken (single). The final two runs were plated by a walk with the base loaded and an RBI single from Lucas Costello.
    • The Deacs loaded the bases after Lanzilli walked and Muntz was hit by a pitch.
  • Teddy McGraw replaced Wade and tossed a scoreless seventh, including two strikeouts. Cole McNamee entered in the eighth, and forced a pair of ground outs to keep the Mountaineers hitless for the fourth-straight inning.
  • Adam Cecere doubled down the left field line with one out in the top of the ninth, but the Deacs were unable to add to their 12-0 lead.
  • Seth Keener hit the hill in the ninth and secured the 12-0 victory with a pair of strikeouts and a line out.
In the Spotlight
Chris Lanzilli entered the Wake Forest record books with his fifth-inning grand slam. His 37 career home runs is tied for the 10th-most in Demon Deacon history, joining Will Craig (2014-16), Danny Borrell (1998-00) and Jason Kramer (1992-95).

Lucas Costello (13 games), Brock Wilken (11) and Brendan Tinsman (6) all extended their hit streaks in the midweek victory.

Words from Walter
"Obviously a good team win there. Reed Mascolo was really sharp, it was the best he's thrown all year. Getting five innings out of him on a Tuesday sets you up for success for sure. I was glad to see some of our young guys go out there, Crawford (Wade), Teddy (McGraw), and Seth (Keener) at the end there have good clean innings, and then Cole (McNamee), it was good to see him back throwing the ball again well. We'll need those guys here down the stretch.

"Good team win. Bobby Seymour continues to swing the bat well. He obviously had some timely hits and took advantage of some walks. Good all-around win that we needed."

On Deck
Wake Forest continues their road trip by jumping back into Atlantic Coast Conference play with a Big 4 matchup in Durham, N.C. versus Duke on April 16-18.
