Women’s Tennis Drops Match at No. 1 North Carolina

Singles performances from Eliza Omirou and Anna Brylin highlight the day for the Demon Deacons.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite strong performances from Eliza Omirou and Anna Brylin in singles, the No. 31 Wake Forest women's tennis team fell at No. 1 North Carolina Friday afternoon, 7-0.

The Demon Deacons (10-9, 6-5 ACC) had a strong showing on court one during doubles play as the No. 30 ranked national pairing of Eliza Omirou and Carolyn Campana nearly knocked off the Tar Heels' (22-0, 12-0 ACC) No. 2 nationally ranked pair of Daavettila and Morra.

Omirou and Campana led 5-3, needing just one more game to win the match, when it went unfinished as North Carolina picked up wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to clinch the doubles point. It would have been the first time Daavettila and Morra would have lost in their career as a pairing.

In singles play, both Eliza Omirou and Anna Brylin got their afternoons off to quick starts as they each won the opening frames of their matches against nationally-ranked opponents.

Brylin raced out to a 6-2 victory in her first frame and nearly knocked off No. 36 Graham before falling in three sets. Omirou battled to a 7-6 (7-2) first-set win, but eventually dropped the three-set match to No. 23 Morra.

Quotable

"Credit to North Carolina today, they have been the No. 1 team in the country all year and we got to see why today. Eliza and Carolyn in No. 1 doubles played great. It was disappointing that they did not get to finish. It was great to get Anna playing again in the doubles. Eliza and Anya both played some very good tennis. So, we might be getting to the right place at the right time. We'll find out Sunday at Duke." - Head Coach Jeff Wyshner
