Wake Forest Caps Off Regular Season with Two Road Wins

4/17/2021 8:33:00 PM | Men's Tennis

No. 10 Demon Deacons recorded wins over No. 25 NC State and NC Central en route to the Saturday sweep.

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 10 Wake Forest men's tennis team picked up two road wins to finalize the 2020-21 regular season against shorthanded No. 25 NC State and NC Central on Saturday.

Wake Forest (27-5, 11-1 ACC) kicked off the day with a dominant 7-0 sweep over No. 25 NC State (10-7, 7-4 ACC) to clinch the second seed at the ACC Championships next week in Rome, Ga. Wake Forest began the match by cruising in doubles and continued that momentum into singles, winning all six matches.

Wake Forest continued their road dominance in the evening match with a tune up against NC Central (1-7) to close out the regular season portion of the schedule. The Deacs quickly topped the Eagles, 4-0.

Quotable:
"Great way to finish regular season with two road wins. I thought we played good in doubles, even though NC State wasn't at full strength they still had good depth. Our guys continued to get better and compete at a high level. I thought it was good to head to NC Central and get a few guys some matches. We're excited and look forward to the ACC Championships next week." - Coach Bresky

Against NC State
Wake Forest started the day by taking the doubles point despite a hard-fought effort by NC State. The Deacs took the first match on court three with Taha Baadi and Melios Efstathiou, 6-1. No. 17 Henri Squire and Eduardo Nava secured the match with a 6-4 mark to capture the point for The Demon Deacons.

The Demon Deacons continued to battle as singles play began. No. 11 Squire continued the momentum as he was first on the board with a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 win. Soon after Squire's win, Siddhant Banthia picked up another straight-set win, advancing the lead to 3-0 and pushing his win streak to eight.

After taking the 3-0 lead, Filippo Moroni claimed the clincher on court six for the second time in two weeks with yet another straight-set win (6-1, 7-5). Wake Forest and NC State played out the rest of the matches.

Baadi and Nava finished quickly after the clinch in straight sets as Rrezart Cungu rebounded after his opponent took the first set. The senior finished the final two sets for the 7-0 Demon Deacon sweep.
