Early Offense Fuels Wake Forest in 14-8 Victory over Western Carolina

4/20/2021 10:43:00 PM | Baseball

Bobby Seymour and Brock Wilken led the Deacs’ offense with a home run and five RBIs apiece.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - A fast start at the plate fueled Wake Forest in a 14-8 victory over Western Carolina in a non-conference battle on Tuesday night.

The Deacs (13-17, 6-14 ACC) quickly jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two and a half frames of play behind nine hits, including a three-run home run from Bobby Seymour and a grand slam from Brock Wilken to cap off the second and third innings.

In the top of the first, nine Demon Deacons entered the batter's box, five of which reached base safely before the first out of the game was recorded.

After the Catamounts (20-10, 8-3 SoCon) responded with three runs in the third, the Deacs plated their final two runs following a two-RBI double by Lucas Costello. Wake Forest tossed three-straight scoreless innings behind the arms of Reed Mascolo and Brennen Oxford to hold a 14-3 advantage through six innings. Western Carolina strung together five runs over the final trio of frames, but ultimately wasn't enough to overcome the early offensive success achieved by the Deacs.

Six Demon Deacons combined for 13 hits, led by Seymour with three, including two doubles. Wilken joined Seymour with a team-high five RBIs as the duo drove in runs off base hits in addition to their home runs. Wilken and Michael Turconi scored a team-best three runs. Additionally, with his second hit of the game in the second inning, Turconi recorded his 100th career hit.

Mascolo earned his third win of the season after five innings of game action, fanning two batters while giving up three earned runs.

After Oxford struck out a batter in a perfect inning on the hill, Hunter Furtado, Camden Minacci, Cole McNamee, Crawford Wade and Teddy McGraw finished the remaining three innings, highlighted by McGraw's ninth inning as the freshman slammed the door on Western Carolina's comeback bid with a strikeout while allowing no hits.

Wake Forest's defense turned four double plays in the win, including a six-four-three double play to end the game.

How It Happened
  • The Deacs opened up the game with a 4-0 lead after their first appearance at the place behind four hits and a pair of walks.
  • Reed Mascolo threw a scoreless opening frame on the mound in his fifth start of the season.
  • Seymour extended Wake Forest's lead to 7-0 with a three-run home run, his sixth in the last six games, in the top of the second inning.
    • The homer plated Turconi, who sprinkled in his second hit of the game, and Wilken, who was hit by a pitch.
  • The Catamounts singled to right field with one out for their second base runner of the game, but Mascolo induced a double play to Seymour, who caught a line out and stepped on first for the third and final out of the frame.
  • Wake Forest tallied another huge inning in the third, taking a 12-0 lead after scoring five runs following a grand slam from Brock Wilken, his 11th home run of the season.
    • The Deacs loaded the bases as Brendan Tinsman (single), Adam Cecere (walk) and Pierce Bennett (bunt single) consecutively reached base . Turconi recorded a RBI-walk to plate the first run of the frame before Wilken's bases-clearing blast.
  • The Catamounts chipped into the Deacs' lead (12-3) with a trio of runs off four hits, including two doubles.
    • Mascolo retired three-straight batters to end the inning and end the scoring threat.
  • A RBI-double from Costello with two outs plated Bennett and Tinsman, who both singled, and increased the Wake Forest advantage to 14-3 in the top half of the fourth.
  • Mascolo tossed his third scoreless frame in the bottom of the fifth inning as the right hander got out of a bases loaded jam with a groundout to Seymour.
    • The Deacs turned a double play for the first pair of outs.
    • The Catamounts loaded the bases after two batters were hit and one drew a walk.
  • Seymour knocked in his second double of the game with one out in the fifth, but Wake Forest was unable to take advantage of the scoring threat as the next two batters were retired.
    • Seymour advanced to third base after a wild pitch with two retired.
  • Mascolo strung together his fourth scoreless inning, highlighted by the team turning its third double play to end the frame.
  • The Deacs were sat down in order to open up the sixth frame.
  • Brennen Oxford took over for Mascolo in the sixth, tossing a perfect three up, three down frame with one strikeout as Wake Forest preserved their 14-3 lead.
  • After Wake Forest was retired in order, the Catamounts plated a run following a walk with the bases loaded to slightly cut in the Deacs' lead (14-4) heading into the last two innings.
    • Hunter Furtado took over the pitching duties, forcing the opening two outs before Camden Minacci hit the hill and included a fly out to his first batter to end a bases loaded threat.
  • Chris Lanzilli and Shane Muntz both walked with one out in the eighth, but a double play ended the top half of the eighth.
  • The Catamounts added four runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but Teddy McGraw was able to hold the Catamounts hitless with a strikeout and a double play to secure the 14-8 win.
    • Minacci faced three batters in the eighth inning before being replaced by Cole McNamee after forcing a fly out. McNamee recorded the final two outs of the inning.
    • Crawford Wade began the ninth on the mound and faced two batters before McGraw replaced the freshman.
In The Spotlight
Brock Wilken and Bobby Seymour powered Wake Forest's offense during the team's opening rally, each launching home runs in the midweek victory to finish with five RBIs apiece.

Wilken's third inning grand slam moved the Valrico, Fla. native into seventh place for the most home runs by a freshman in program history with 11 blasts through 30 games. The third baseman needs six more home runs to tie the record set by Jamie D'Antona in 2001 with 17 blasts.

Seymour's three-run shot marked the sixth home run in his last six games and the ninth HR of the 2021 season, tying his previous career high set back in 2019.

Additionally, the St. Johns, Ind. native leads the Deacs with 35 RBIs.

Words from Walter
"Really pleased with our at-bats today. Bobby Seymour with five RBI's. Brock Wilken with five RBI's. Reed Mascolo gave us another solid start, wasn't as solid as he had been his last couple starts but still obviously gave us a chance to win and got five innings. Our bullpen was okay. We did some good things in the bullpen. I was really happy with Teddy McGraw's ninth inning and obviously this is good momentum headed into a big Clemson series where we've got to start winning some games in the league."

On Deck
Wake Forest concludes their eight-game road stand at Clemson on April 23-25 before returning home for four games next week at David F. Couch Ballpark, beginning on April 27 versus Davidson.

The Deacs will stay in the friendly confines of The Couch for an ACC series against NC State on April 30-May 1.
