The No. 32 Wake Forest women’s tennis team cruised to an easy 5-0 victory over No. 42 ranked Syracuse to advance for their fifth consecutive ACC Championship.
ROME, Ga. – The No. 32 Wake Forest women's tennis team advanced to the ACC Championship Quarterfinals with a 5-0 victory over No. 42 Syracuse on Thursday morning.
This marks the fifth consecutive ACC Championship the team has advanced in its first match at the tournament.
With the help of a clutch tiebreaker from the Demon Deacons' (11-11, 6-7 ACC) No. 38 ranked doubles pairing of Eliza Omirou and Carolyn Campana, Wake Forest claimed the doubles point over the Orange (7-11, 5-8 ACC).
After a quick 6-3 victory from No. 30 ranked Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth in the No. 2 doubles match, it all came down to court one where the match was back and forth the entire way. The match eventually went to a tiebreaker at 6-6.
The tiebreaker went extra point with Campana providing the winner for the Deacs, 7-6 (9-7).
That momentum carried over into singles action as the Demon Deacons jumped on the Orange from the outset. Wake Forest won four of six opening sets.
In the middle courts, Omirou and Brylin were in control all morning, both cruising to straight-set victories as they both captured 6-1, 6-2 wins to give the Demon Deacons a commanding advantage.
Minutes later, freshman Casie Wooten provided the clincher for Wake Forest, posting a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 victory. Just moments later, fellow freshman Brooke Killingsworth provided the final point of the match as the Demon Deacons advanced with a 5-0 second round win.
Quotable
"Any win in the ACC tournament is a good one. The doubles point really played a big role in giving us momentum. Anya and Brooke were great from the start and then Eliza and Carolyn were down three match points at 40-15 and down a couple more in the tiebreaker, but they gutted it out like you want your top players to do. From there, our 3-6 just played great in singles and didn't let up at all after the emotion of the doubles. We live to play again tomorrow." - Coach Jeff Wyshner
