No. 11 Wake Forest Falls Just Short in Automatic Qualifier Game at No. 1 North Carolina

4/23/2021 4:07:00 PM | Field Hockey

Immie Gillgrass posted the first goal and assist of her career, while Tori Glaister made a career-high seven saves.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 11 Wake Forest field hockey fell just short in the second overtime period of the Atlantic Coast Conference's Automatic Qualifier Game against No. 1 North Carolina by a final score of 3-2 at Karen Shelton Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Deacs (6-11, 3-3 ACC) scored the opening goal of the game after Maggie Dickman found the back of the cage off an assist from Immie Gillgrass. The score marked the second-straight game Dickman netted a goal and the first assist of Gillgrass' career.

The Tarheels (16-1, 6-0) responded and tallied the final goal of the first half almost three minutes later as the teams headed into the second half deadlocked at 1.

Following a North Carolina goal a little over one minute into the third period, the Deacs tied the game at the 43-minute mark as Gillgrass got her stick on a shot from Lee Ann Gordon following a penalty corner and knocked it past the Tar Heels' goalkeeper. The score came after Wake Forest placed immense pressure on North Carolina's defense in a five-minute span, attempting six shots and two penalty corners before Gillgrass netted the first goal of her career.

The teams battled for 10 minutes in the first overtime, highlighted by a tremendous pair of saves by Tori Glaister, her sixth and seventh stops, to keep the game tied. Overall, Glaister finished with a career-high seven saves while facing 10 shots on goal in her 10th start of the season.

Ultimately, North Carolina capitalized on a penalty stroke three minutes into the second OT to claim the 3-2 victory.

How It Happened
  • The Deacs posed the first threat of the game almost halfway into the first period as Maggie Dickman and Nat Friedman (penalty corner) recorded shots on goal, but the Tar Heels were able to deny the opportunities.
  • Wake Forest scored the first goal of the game as Maggie Dickman found the back of the net off an assist by Immie Gillgrass at the 10:16 mark of the opening period.
  • North Carolina responded with a goal off a rebound of a save at the 13 minute mark to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second quarter.
  • The Tar Heels threatened twice in the second period, but were unable to take a lead as the teams went into halftime tied at 1. Tori Glaister made her second save of the game in the period, while a North Carolina goal was called off due to the ball going out of bounds prior to the shot being taken.
    • North Carolina attempted six shots compared to the Deacs' four shots in the opening 30 minutes. Dickman was aggressive for most of the opening half, tallying three of Wake Forest's strikes.
    • The Wake Forest defense was able to defend a pair of North Carolina penalty corners in the period.
  • The Tar Heels took a 2-1 lead a little over a minute into the third quarter after a netting a goal off a shot that ricocheted off Glaister.
  • Hannah Maxwell blocked another penalty opportunity for the Tar Heels at the 32 minute mark to keep the game at 2-1. An obstruction took away a North Carolina score off another penalty corner just moments later.
  • Immie Gillgrass deflected a shot from Lee Ann Gordon following a penalty corner into the goal to tie the game at 2 at the 43-minute mark of the contest, capping off an aggressive four-minute span by the Deacs.
    • In that span, Gillgrass attempted a pair of shots, Grace Delmotte had a shot blocked and Meike Lanckohr fired a shot wide and had her final attempt blocked.
  • Glasiter made two outstanding saves with less than two minutes remaining right in front of the goal to keep the teams locked at two at the end of regulation.
  • After Friedman fired a shot just wide of the goal in the opening minutes of the overtime period, Glasiter denied back-to-back shots for her sixth and seventh saves of the game to keep the 2-2 tie with just over seven minutes left in the first overtime period. The Deacs and Tarheels combined for six shots in the first overtime period, but none were able to find the back of the cage to force a second overtime period.
  • The Tarheels capitalized on a penalty stroke three minutes in the second overtime period to win the game by a final score of 3-2.
Quotable - Head Coach Jennifer Averill
"There isn't anything we can say to this group of women other than other than the fact that we are so incredibly proud of their performances today. It was by far one of our strongest performances of the year. We controlled what we could. Additionally, today was a moment of growth and maturity."

2021 Spring Review
The Deacs finished the spring portion of the 2020-21 season with a 3-2 record, good for second place in the ACC.

Wake Forest started the conference campaign with a 3-0 shutout victory over Boston College at Kentner Stadium on March 6. A fast start propelled the Deacs as the team found the back of the net in the first quarter with a goal by Nat Friedman. Hannah Maxwell added to the Wake Forest advantage with a pair of second half scores, the first goals of her career. Maxwell became the first Demon Deacon to record a pair of goals in a game since Grace Delmotte on Nov. 1, 2020.

Additionally, Eleanor Winants posted a hat trick, assisting on the trio of goals to record a new career high. Tori Glastier was tough in the cage, earning her first-career victory after tallying a career-best six saves.

Next, the Deacs welcomed the Tar Heels to Kentner for their second game of the spring, falling 2-0. Wake Forest responded by rattling off two-straight wins against Duke and Virginia.

Their 4-1 victory at Duke on March 19 came after a pair of goals in the first and second half as Friedman, Olivia Corthals, Meike Lanckohr and Maxwell all found the back of the net in the win.

Maxwell was the hero in the 3-2 win over Virginia as the rookie netted the golden goal in overtime, the Deacs' fourth attempt of the extra period.

After a cancellation due to weather in Syracuse, Wake Forest finished off the regular season at Louisville, dropping the finale by a final score of 4-1.

Maxwell earned a pair of All-ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors for her contributions in the shutout victory over Boston College and her game-winning goal versus Virginia. Additionally, Glastier was recognized as ACC Defensive Player of the Week on March 23 for her instrumental role in the 4-1 victory over Duke, saving a career-high tying six shots and helped the Deacs hold the Blue Devils scoreless for 52-plus minutes of game action.

The NCAA Field Hockey selection show will unveil the postseason bracket tomorrow, April 24.

This year's NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships will feature a 12-team field (instead of the usual 16 teams), consisting of 10 automatic qualifiers and two at-large selections. However, because the Ivy League elected to not play field hockey in the spring, one of the 10 automatic qualifying spots has been shifted to an at-large bid.
