Wake Forest’s six home runs against the Wildcats tied a season-high for homers in a game.
The Demon Deacons (14-20, 6-17 ACC) hit six home runs for the second time this season, earning big flies off the bats of Lucas Costello, Michael Turconi, Brock Wilken and Bobby Seymour. The Turconi-Wilken-Seymour trio hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning, the second time this season Wake Forest has hit three consecutive home runs in a game.
Davidson (20-18, 4-8 A10) kept the game close through the middle innings, but ultimately could not curtail the Deacs' bats enough to stay in the ballgame, as Costello's fifth inning home run gave Wake Forest a 10-7 lead that they would not relinquish.
Seymour had the fourth multi-home run of his career. His first inning solo-shot soared over the right field wall at 489 feet off the bat. His three-run home run in the seventh inning cleared the batter's eye in center field for a 431-foot bomb.
Turconi had his first multi-home run game of his career. The Beaver Falls, Pa. native hit two solo-homers in his first two at bats. He later added two more RBIs thanks to an eighth-inning single.
Reed Mascolo set a career high in strikeouts in his sixth start of the season, fanning seven Wildcats over 4.2 innings. The Deacs have won every game Mascolo has started this season.
Camden Minacci earned his first career win in relief for Wake Forest.
How It Happened
- Reed Mascolo fanned a pair of batters to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the opening inning.
- The Deacs launched back-to-back-to-back solo home runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
- Michael Turconi started off the scoring with a shot to left field, followed by Brock Wilken's 12th HR of his freshman season. The sequence was capped off by a 489-foot shot from Bobby Seymour, marking a new career high for home runs in a season with 10.
- Davidson plated a run behind a trio of hits to chip into Wake Forest's lead (3-1) in the top half of the second.
- After a pair of ground outs, the Wildcats knocked in three-straight hits, capped off with a RBI ground-rule double. Mascolo forced a lineout to Wilken at third to end the frame.
- Nothing was doing for the Deacs in the home half of the second as Wake Forest was retired in order.
- A two-run home run by Davidson with one out tied the game at 3 heading to the home half of the third.
- Another three-run inning broke the tie and gave Wake Forest a 6-3 lead after three full frames.
- Turconi hit his second home run of the game to jumpstart the scoring run.
- Michael Ludowig drove in the second run with a RBI-single as the Deacs loaded the bases with no one out following the solo shot. A hit-by-pitch plated the third and final run.
- Mascolo continued to make batters miss, striking out the side in the top of the fourth and keeping the Deacs' advantage to 6-3.
- Mascolo fanned the final two pairs of the third inning as he fanned five straight Wildcats.
- The trio of strikeouts in the frame increased the right handers total to seven, a new career high.
- The Deacs were also retired in order in the bottom of the fourth.
- Davidson plated four runs, three unearned, with two outs to regain the lead (7-6) in the top of the fifth.
- Mascolo induced a pair of groundouts for the first outs of the frame. Following a RBI-double, Brennen Oxford took over on the mound.
- After a walk, the Wildcats added an unearned run following a field error. A triple plated the final pair of runs before Oxford forced a ground out to end the inning.
- The Deacs answered and regained the lead with a four-run inning of their own, all with two outs and highlighted by a three-run shot by Lucas Costello.
- Consecutive walks from Ludowig and Tinsman and a wild pitch placed Deacs on second and third. With two outs, Pierce Bennett reached on a fielding error to score Ludowig from third for the first run.
- Davidson got a run back in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to right field with two outs.
- Camden Minacci replaced Oxford on the hill, striking out his first batter to conclude the inning.
- Wake Forest responded with a run of their own, taking back a three-run lead (11-8) with an all-around team effort at the plate.
- Seymour (single) and Lanzilli (walk) put the Deacs on first and second with no one out. Ludowig moved the pair over with a sacrifice bunt, and Seymour was brought home after a RBI-groundout from Brendan Tinsman.
- The Wildcats made it a one-run game (11-10) with a two out, two-RBI double.
- Minacci forced the opening pair of outs in the inning before Hunter Furtado hit the mound. The lefty induced a pop up to Turconi to end the inning.
- Seymour smashed a three-run home run to increase Wake Forest's advantage to 14-10 heading into the top of the eighth.
- Costello (hit by pitch) and Wilken (walk) were plated on the home run.
- Davidson cut the Deacs' lead (14-12) in half with a two-run home run in the opening frame of the eighth. Wake Forest called on Teddy McGraw in relief of Crawford Wade as the freshman forced the final two outs, including a strikeout.
- Wake Forest plated a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an RBI-walk from Lucas Costello and a two-run single from the bat of Turconi, taking a 17-12 lead into the ninth.
- Cole McNamee took the mound in the top of ninth and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard, working around a pair of hit batsmen to strikeout the side and secure the win.
"Obviously a good win. Offensively, we did a great job today. Bobby (Seymour) and (Michael) Turc(oni) had big days. I thought the two big blows offensively were Lucas Costello, with two outs, hits the grand slam, and Bobby Seymour, with two outs, hits the three-run homer.
"On the mound, Reed (Mascolo) was solid. In the fourth and fifth inning he threw the ball really well. I was really excited about how Teddy McGraw threw the ball late in the game, so he'll be a big piece for us down the stretch. Good team win, and now we have to get ready for NC State."
