The Deacs plated all nine runs off five HRs, led by Michael Ludowig with two.
The Demon Deacons (17-27, 7-22 ACC) scored all nine runs off of five home runs, led by
Michael Ludowig with two long-flies, the first multi-HR game of his career. Brock Wilken (three-run), Bobby Seymour (solo) and Shane Muntz (three-run) also tallied homers.
Overall, Muntz and Seymour led the Demon Deacons at the plate with three hits each.
Following Wilken's HR in the top of the third, the Chanticleers (23-23, 6-12 Sun Belt) answered with a four-run inning and never looked back, holding onto the lead for the remainder of the game as they scored 11 of their 14 runs with two outs.
Reed Mascolo made the start on the mound and pitched the first three innings of the non-conference matchup, punching out three Chanticleers batters while allowing seven earned runs.
Camden Minacci, Brennen Oxford, Cole McNamee, Crawford Wade and Seth Keener all took to the mound in relief. The freshmen duo of Wade and Keener conceded zero earned runs, while Oxford led the group with a pair of punch outs.
How It Happened
- Both teams were unable to reach base in the opening frame of the contest.
- Reed Mascolo began his seventh start on the mound with a strikeout to the leadoff batter.
- Chris Lanzilli knocked in Wake Forest's first base hit of the night with a single to left field with one out in the second. Another single courtesy of Shane Muntz put runners on the corners. A lineout double play ended the scoring threat.
- Coastal Carolina took a 3-0 advantage in the home half of the inning with a three-run shot to left field.
- A walk and hit by pitch placed a pair of Chanticleers on base.
- The Deacs answered with a three-run home run of their own as Brock Wilken connected on his 16th blast of his freshman season. Lucas Costello and Michael Turconi were plated on the homer as the duo tallied back-to-back singles.
- Following the bases-clearing hit, Bobby Seymour registered Wake Forest's fourth-straight base knock with a single to left field.
- Coastal Carolina retook the lead (7-3) with a four-run third inning behind five hits, including back-to-back doubles.
- After the Demon Deacons were retired in order, the Chanticleers plated another run in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 8-3.
- Minacci took over the pitching duties in the beginning of the inning. He induced back-to-back fly outs after tossing a pair of walks.
- Turconi took a ground ball and stepped on second base for the third and final out.
- Pierce Bennett tallied a leadoff walk to open the fifth inning. A pair of strikeouts and a pop up stranded James Broderick on base, who pinch ran for Bennett.
- Minacci tossed a hitless fifth inning, including his first strikeout of his outing.
- Seymour knocked out his 19th home run of the season to right field to chip into Coastal Carolina's lead (8-4) halfway through the sixth.
- Muntz (double) and Michael Ludowig (fielding error) reached base following the solo blast, but the Demon Deacons were unable to plate the pair as a ground out ended the inning.
- Three runs in the home half of the sixth inning added to the Chanticleers' lead (11-4).
- Brennen Oxford was called upon to relieve Minacci, and punched out a pair of Coastal Carolina batters in his first frame of work.
- The Deacs loaded the bases to open the seventh, but were unable to plate a run.
- Costello opened the frame with a leadoff single, followed by a walk to Turconi and Wilken being hit by a pitch. The next three Deacs were retired to end the scoring opportunity.
- Coastal Carolina added a run in the home half of the inning, increasing their lead to 12-4 through seven full innings.
- Cole McNamee induced the opening pair of outs in the inning before being replaced by Crawford Wade, who forced a fly out to the first batter he faced.
- Michael Ludowig launched a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, making it a 12-5 ballgame.
- James Broderick followed Ludowig's blast with a single to third base.
- The Chanticleers extended their lead to 14-5 with two runs in their final plate appearance of the game off of two hits and two errors.
- Seth Keener replaced Wade with one out and one on due to a throwing error. After conceding a single, the freshman fanned a Chanticleer for the second out of the inning.
- Coastal Carolina scored an unearned run following a fielding error, the Deacs ended the inning with a fielder's choice at second base.
- Wake Forest scored four runs in the ninth after a three-run home run from Shane Muntz and a solo shot by Ludowig that hit off the left field foul pole before ultimately falling to the Chanticleers by a final score of 14-9.
Michael Ludowig went 2-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs, his first multi-home run game of his Demon Deacon career. Ludowig notched his homers in back-to-back innings, with the first going out of Springs Brooks Stadium to right field in the eighth inning before the Ashburn, Va. native came back in the ninth and hit an opposite shot down the left field line, knocking off the foul pole for Wake Forest's final run of the game.
The next time both Bobby Seymour and Brock Wilken go yard, they will rewrite the Wake Forest record book.
One more HR will mark the 37th of Seymour's career, helping him enter the top-10 in program history for career home runs.
With Wilken's 16th homer tonight, the Valrico, Fla. native has now hit the second-most home runs by a Demon Deacon freshman ever. He is just one away from tying the Wake Forest freshman record held by Jamie D'Antona, which was set back in 2001.
Words From Walter
"We gave up 11 runs with two outs today, which is, quite honestly, really hard to do and we just didn't make enough pitches. We had some good at-bats all day. (We) got a little unlucky with a couple of line-drives that found gloves. (We) had the bases loaded with nobody out, didn't score. Hit two balls on the nose in that inning that didn't find holes. Coastal made a couple good defensive plays. Again, we couldn't get off the field with two outs and that was the difference in the game."
On Deck
Wake Forest heads back to Winston-Salem to wrap up the regular season with their final series of 2021 at David F. Couch Ballpark against Pitt on May 20-22, highlighted by Senior Day on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
