Wake Forest Drops Series Finale to NC State

5/2/2021 5:09:00 PM | Baseball

Bobby Seymour and Chris Lanzilli hit back-to-back home runs twice in the contest.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --  Wake Forest continued their hot hitting, but could not contain NC State's offense, falling 15-8 in the series finale on Sunday at David F. Couch Ballpark.

The Deacs (15-22, 7-19 ACC) had five different batters come around to score, led by three runs from Bobby Seymour. Seymour and Chris Lanzilli combined for four home runs and six RBIs to keep the Demon Deacon offense humming.

Brendan Tinsman joined Seymour with a team-high three hits on the afternoon, while Brock Wilken also tallied a multi-hit game as the Valrico, Fla. native knocked in a pair of singles.

The Wolfpack (22-14, 14-13 ACC) scored six unearned runs during the afternoon, serving as their insurance runs behind the nine earned runs. On the mound, the NC State staff limited the free baserunners to just three (one error, one walk, one hit-by-pitch).

Teddy McGraw and Cam Minacci each posted scoreless outings in relief, as the Wake Forest pitching staff combined to strike out 12 Wolfpack batters.

How It Happened
  • William Fleming tossed a scoreless first inning of work, capped off with his first strikeout.
  • Wake Forest was retired in order in their first opportunity at the plate.
  • Fleming registered his second-straight scoreless inning to open the game, fanning a pair of batters.
  • Back-to-back home runs to open the bottom half of the second from Bobby Seymour and Chris Lanzilli put the Deacs up 2-0.
  • NC State took hold of a 3-2 lead after plating three runs in the third behind two hits, a walk, a fielding error and a passed ball.
    • Fleming ended the inning with his fourth strikeout of the contest.
  • The Deacs were retired in order to end the third.
  • The Wolfpack added to their lead (6-2) in the opening frame of the fourth, plating three runs on four hits and one error.
  • Fleming kept the Wolkfpack off the scoreboard in the fifth with a pair of fly outs and a ground out.
    • NC State doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Fleming induced a fly out to Costello to end the threat.
  • Brendan Tinsman dropped in a single to center field with one out in the fifth. Following a fielder's choice, the fifth ended with a strikeout.
  • NC State jumped out to a 12-2 advantage in the sixth after plating six runs on six hits, including a three-run home run, a two-run home run and a triple.
    • Hunter Furtado replaced Fleming on the mound and induced all three of the outs (strikeout, line out and ground out).
  • The Deacs chipped into the Wolfpack lead (12-5) with a solo home run and a pair of RBI-groundouts in the home half of the sixth. Overall, Wake Forest smacked five hits in the frame.
  • A leadoff home run added a run to NC State's lead (13-5) in the seventh.
    • Seth Keener replaced Furtado on the mound to open the frame and struck out back-to-back batters for the final two outs.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, Seymour (two-run) and Lanzilli (solo) once again launched back-to-back home runs to make it a 13-8 ballgame.
    • Costello recorded a leadoff single and was brought home on the Seymour HR.
  • NC State answered with two runs of their own off of a trio of hits and a throwing error.
    • Crawford Wade faced the first two Wolfpack batters of the inning before Teddy McGraw took over the pitching duties and got out of the inning with two strikeouts.
  • Tinsman knocked in his third base hit of the day with a double and Pierce Bennett joined him on the base paths as a pinch runner after Cole McNamee was walked. The duo advanced to second and third following a wild pitch, but were unable to be brought home after a strikeout and line out.
  • Camden Minacci tossed a scoreless top half of the ninth, including two strikeouts.
  • Brock Wilken knocked in a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, but could not advance past that, as the following three Deacs were retired in order to end the game, 15-8.
Words from Walter
"We just didn't pitch it well enough to win today. Disappointing loss, obviously we had enough
offense to win today, just didn't get it done on the mound or defensively."

In the Spotlight
Bobby Seymour and Chirs Lanzilli hit back-to-back home runs twice in Sunday's contest. Wake Forest's No. 4 and No. 5 hitters combined to go 5-for-9 at the dish, plating six RBIs and scoring five runs of their own.
