Three Demon Deacons sit inside the top 20.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Wake Forest women's golf team battled wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour on their second nine holes to finish the first day of NCAA Championship play in a tie for fourth place.
Three Deacs were sitting even par through their first nine holes to get Wake Forest as high as tied for first on the board. Sophomore Rachel Kuehn got started early with a birdie on the first and followed it up with another on seven. She carried that momentum into the second nine and birdied the par-four 10th. She finished the day one over par and T19.
Senior captains Siyun Liu and Emilia Migliaccio ended the day on a high note for the Deacs as they each birdied their final two holes of the day. They each hit the par-five 18th green in two and two-putted for the third birdie of the round for them both.
Liu was the low Deac for the first round, with her final two birdies making up for her single bogey on the second nine. She currently sits even par and in a tie for fifth.
Freshman Mimi Rhodes was the third Demon Deacon inside the top 20, finishing the day next to Kuehn at one over and T19. Two birdies to counter two bogeys on the front kept her even through the first half of the day and had just one blemish on her second nine.
Wake Forest tee times for the second round will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.
