WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Hayes announced the promotion of Ashley Bastron to Associate Head Coach on Tuesday.
"I am so excited to elevate Coach Bastron to associate head coach," said Hayes, who is entering his sixth year in charge of the program. "She stepped up big when we needed her over this past year. She is willing to do whatever the program needs of her for us to be successful. She is an excellent coach and an even better person. Every student-athlete on the team knows that they can go to her."
"I am so grateful I am able to coach our student-athletes at Wake Forest and it is an honor to receive this promotion," said Bastron. "We are building something really special here and I cannot wait to take on additional responsibilities to continue helping our program grow. I am surrounded by an amazing group of people who work hard to be their best selves and it is a joy to work alongside them. I want to thank Coach Hayes and our administration for providing me with this opportunity, and to all the athletes I have coached at Wake Forest who have helped me get to this point. I promise I will not let them down.
Bastron has served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest since August 2019. In her first cross country season with the Demon Deacons, Wake Forest's women placed sixth at the ACC Championships and had two All-ACC performers, Elise Wright (14th) and Samantha Halvorsen (19th). The team then went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship with two All-Region performers, Halvorsen (13th) and Madeline Rehm (22nd).
During the 2020 indoor season, the women's team placed 11th as a team at the ACC Indoor Championships, tying their highest finish since 2009. During the 2021 indoor season, Coach Bastron coached Hannah Brookover who qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000m where she captured Second Team All-American honors.
Bastron joined the Demon Deacons after having served as head track and field and cross country coach at Purdue Fort Wayne from 2017-19.
