No. 11 Wake Forest Drops Sunday Contest Versus No. 2 Michigan in ACC-Big Ten Challenge

8/29/2021 4:57:00 PM | Field Hockey

The Deacs put three of their four shots attempts on goal, while holding the Wolverines to just five total shots on the afternoon.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 11 Wake Forest dropped a Sunday afternoon contest, 2-0, against No. 2 Michigan in the Demon Deacons' second match in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Grant Field.

The Demon Deacons (0-2) and Wolverines (2-0) played a tough, physical defensive battle as Wake Forest's stifling defense held Michigan to just four shots on goal, the lowest mark since the Deacs' first-round matchup in the 2020 ACC Championships against Virginia  on Nov. 5.

Michigan capitalized on their corner opportunities, scoring the match's only goals immediately after penalty corners.

Sophomore Tori Glaister made her second-straight start in the goal, notching a save in both the first and third periods in a full 60:00 minutes of game action.

A quartet of Deacs each fired a shot, including opportunities on goal from junior Nat Friedman and freshman Ashley Hart

How It Happened

  • Nat Friedman launched the first shot of the game with a little over five minutes into the contest. Both teams didn't attempt a shot over the next eight minutes.

  • Michigan found the back of the net following a penalty corner with less than two minutes remaining in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead.

    • Tori Glaister notched her first save of the game prior to the goal on Michigan's first penalty corner, but the Wolverines rebounded the stop into the goal for the game's first score.

  • The Deacs threatened five minutes into the second period as Meike Lanckohr attempted her first shot following Wake Forest's first penalty corner.

  • Michigan held onto their 1-0 lead going into intermission as the teams continued to play a physical, defensive game.

    • The Demon Deacons and Wolverines were tied in shots (two), shots on goal (two) and corners (one) during the first 30 minutes of game action.

  • The Wolverines increased their lead to 2-0 after finding the back of the net, capitalizing off consecutive penalty corners at the 32-minute mark.

  • Glaister made her second save of the game in the third quarter (38:25 mark).

  • Wake Forest attempted the game's only shot in the fourth quarter (Elisha Evans) as Michigan held on to take the non-conference battle, 2-0.
