Demon Deacons Fall in ACC Opener

9/10/2021 11:08:00 PM | Men's Soccer

The Demon Deacons dropped their first ACC match of the season in an Atlantic Division showdown.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Wake Forest's No. 25-ranked men's soccer team (2-2-0, 0-1-0) dropped its ACC opener on Friday night, falling to Louisville (3-2-0, 1-0-0) by a final of 3-0 at Lynn Stadium.

Wake Forest gave up two goals in the first half before conceding a goal on a penalty kick in the 55th minute.

The Demon Deacons will now turn their attention to the ACC home opener next Friday, hosting Pitt at Spry Stadium.

How It Happened

  • Louisville scored two first half goals to enter the break up 2-0, as Aboubacar Camara scored in the 18th minute before Josh Jones struck in the 28th minute.

  • The Demon Deacons were outshot 9-1 in the first half.

  • It looked as if Wake Forest had tied the match at 1-1 in the 26th minute, but the Demon Deacons were called for offsides after senior Kyle Holcomb found the back of the net.

  • The Demon Deacons opened the second half aggressively, recording five shots in the first eight minutes out of halftime. In total, Wake Forest outshot Louisville 10-4 in the second half.

  • Wake Forest went down a man in the 55th minute after being issued a red card.

  • The Cardinals added a third goal through Pedro Fonseca off a penalty kick following the red card, closing out scoring for the night.

Demon Deacon Details of Note

Muuss' Musings
"It stinks. Give Louisville a heck of a lot of credit. They wanted it more, they were more assertive, better on the ball and more aggressive. We just couldn't get out of our own way in the first half. I just told the guys, we're going to wake up tomorrow and it's going to be another day. We just have to do a better job of playing our brand of football."

Up Next

Wake Forest will return to Winston-Salem for its first home ACC match of the season next Friday, when the Demon Deacons host Pitt.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
