Wake Forest Defeats Bellarmine in Weekend Opener

9/10/2021 7:03:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

BOONE, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team defeated the Bellarmine Knights, 3-0, in their opening match of the Mountaineer Classic, hosted by App State, on Friday.

Ashley Slater and Kamryn Malloy led the Deacs offensively with 10 kills apiece, thanks to 40 assists from Andrea Fuentes. In addition to the helpers, Fuentes also recorded two kills and two digs. Peyton Suess was a defensive anchor in the back, recording a team-high 16 digs. She also chipped in eight kills, two assists and two blocks. Libero Kalani Whillock was right behind Suess with 11 digs and recorded the lone service ace of the match. Olivia Franke added a match-high three blocks and chipped in nine kills for a match-high .667 hitting percentage. Delaney McSweeney also had nine kills from the middle.

How It Happened
After trailing 4-1 in the first set, the Deacs went on a 5-1 run to jump to a 6-5 lead. Each team remained within a single point of the other in a back-and-forth battle until a block from Slater and Franke put the momentum in favor of the Deacs. A kill from Malloy tied the match at 19 and a kill from Slater gave the Deacs the 20-19 lead and the spark they needed to finish the set. Two kills from Suess and one from McSweeney sealed the set, 25-21, to put the Deacs up 1-0.

Wake Forest carried that momentum into the second set, jumping to an early 10-4 lead and forcing a Bellarmine timeout. Kills from Malloy and Slater helped the Deacs maintain their strong lead, going up 14-9. Suess and McSweeney also contributed points to get the Deacs up to a 17-11 lead before Bellarmine used their final timeout of the set. McSweeney and Malloy got the Deacs to a 20-13 lead and back-to-back kills from Slater and Franke sealed the set, 25-19, and the Deacs went up 2-0 heading into the third.

The Deacs took another commanding lead to start the third, going up 7-3 on the Knights and never trailing.  Wake Forest got up to a 16-12 lead before Bellarmine called their first timeout and, unable to come up with a solution, called their second timeout when the Deacs went up 20-13. After a 5-2 run from Bellarmine, kills from Malloy and Abby Krueger sealed the set, 25-18, to give Wake Forest their fourth sweep of the season.

Coach's Comments
"We definitely got off to a slow start but didn't let that hold us back. The team continued to work together and earn every point. We made some mistakes that we need to clean up, but the players executed when it mattered, and we got the win. We have some things to work on but also have some good momentum to carry into our two matches tomorrow." – head coach Randi Smart
