
Demon Deacons Hit the Road for Final Non-Conference Tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team will travel to Boone, North Carolina this weekend for its final non-conference tournament before returning to Varsity Gym for their home-opener next week.
Wake Forest will face Bellarmine, Charlotte, and App State this weekend in the four-team event at App State. The Deacs are coming off a 2-1 weekend in Nashville where they fell to No. 15 Western Kentucky, battled Kansas in five sets, and defeated host school Lipscomb. Redshirt sophomore Delaney McSweeney earned All-Tournament honors for her efforts on the net, finishing the three-match weekend with 27 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. She also chipped in 14 blocks.
Last Time Out
Kansas 3, Wake Forest 2 (24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11)
The Deacs began last weekend's LUV Invite against an unfamiliar foe, Kansas. The first-ever matchup between the two schools came down to a decisive fifth set. The Deacs maintained high production on offense, with outside hitter Kamryn Malloy collecting a season-high 17 kills along with seven blocks. Middle blocker Delaney McSweeney also recorded a couple of season highs, tallying 12 kills and seven blocks. Defensively, Kalani Whillock recorded a match-high 32 digs.
No. 15 Western Kentucky 3, Wake Forest 0 (Set One: 20-25, Set Two: 21-25, Set Three: 13-25)
In their second match during the LUV Invite, Wake Forest squared off against No. 15 Western Kentucky. After coming off a season-high 14 kills against Kansas, sophomore Ashley Slater continued her strong play by leading the Wake Forest attack with 11 kills. Redshirt senior Andrea Fuentes continued to set up the offense for success as she collected 26 assists. On the defensive side, sophomore Olivia Franke added four blocks and freshman Kahlani Whillock recorded nine digs.
Wake Forest 3, Lipscomb 1 (Set One: 21-25, Set Two: 25-17, Set Three: 25-23, Set Four: 25-16)
For their first-ever meeting, the Demon Deacons defeated the Bison 3-1, including a fourth set that featured an incredible 15-1 run to secure the victory. After trailing 6-1 in set four, sophomore Ashley Slater started the rally by recording back-to-back kills and the Deacs took the lead for good. Grad transfer Kamryn Malloy led the Deacs with 13 kills and, just like the previous two matches, the offense was paced by redshirt senior, Andrea Fuentes and her 45 assists, which was her third match with 40 or more assists this season. Defensively, redshirt sophomore Delaney McSweeney recorded five blocks and freshman Kalani Whillock had 22 digs, which was her second career match with 20 more digs.
The Matches
Bellarmine
In just their second-ever matchup since November 17, 1979 (Bellarmine 2, Wake 0), the Demon Deacons and the Knights are set to square off on Friday afternoon. Bellarmine earned their first win of the season last week against George Washington University by a 3-0 margin and are currently 1-4 on the season. On offense, the Knights feature two student-athletes who have 60 or more kills (junior, Jayme Scott-75 and freshman, Seville Gates-61). Bellarmine's offense is paced by junior Emily Arnold who already has 161 assists on the season. Defensively, the Knights have four student-athletes that have five or more blocks on the year: senior Bailey Roszman (eight), freshman Seville Gates (seven), and freshman Ashley Nordman and junior Ashley Price each have five.
Charlotte
Saturday morning will be the 21st meeting between the Demon Deacons and the 49ers. Wake Forest leads the all-time series 12-8, with Wake Forest winning the last match 3-1 back in 2016. Charlotte is 4-2 this season and looking to continue to build off their early season success. The 49ers entered last weekend's Windy City Classic with a 2-1 record and returned to Charlotte with an overall record of 4-2, with wins over Niagara and Chicago State. Senior Sydney Rowan leads the Niners offensively with 76 kills, and freshman Emani Foster is close behind with 71. Freshman Sophie Whalen carries a team-high 76 digs into the weekend.
App State
After starting the season with a 2-1 record, App State is looking to get back on track. The Mountaineers (3-3) enter the weekend looking to build off their win against East Tennessee State at home last weekend. App State is led offensively by junior Denny McCall who leads the Mountaineers with 86 kills through six matches. Defensively, Emma Reilly leads the team with 106 digs. Saturday's match will mark the 27th time the Deacons and Mountaineers will face off against each other. The Deacons lead the overall series 15-11, and this will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2012 when the Deacons swept the Mountaineers, 3-0.
