Wake Forest Primed for Home Tournament at Old Town Club

The No. 17 Demon Deacons are set to host the third annual Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational on Monday, Sept. 27 and Tuesday, Sept. 28.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The No. 17 Wake Forest men's golf team is set to play in its second tournament of the 2021-22 season this week, hosting the third annual Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

All Wake Forest students, faculty and fans are encouraged to come out and support the Demon Deacons. Admission to the event is free.

This year's 14-team field includes a pair of fellow ACC squads in Duke and Virginia Tech. Also joining the No. 17 Demon Deacons in the tournament are College of Charleston, Davidson, ECU, Kansas St., Kentucky, Loyola (Md.), Penn State, Rutgers, SMU, Southern Miss and UNC-Greensboro.

In the first event of the season at the Maridoe Collegiate in Carrollton, Texas, sophomore Michael Brennan had a strong showing to lead the way for the Demon Deacons.

Brennan, who captured two individual titles in his first two collegiate events a season ago, placed inside of the top 30. Additionally, he was the top Demon Deacon on the leaderboard after every round of the tournament, finishing tied for 29th.

After being in the No. 3 spot in the opening tournament of the season, Brennan slides up one position to the No. 2 spot in the lineup for his first start at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational.

Tomorrow's first round is scheduled for a 8:25 a.m. (ET) start as Wake Forest tees off hole one. The Demon Deacons will be paired with Duke and SMU on the opening day of play.

Additionally, the Demon Deacons will compete with a second team that will tee off at 7:30 a.m. off hole one with Davidson and Kentucky.

THE DEACS' LINEUP FOR THE MARIDOE COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL

Fitzpatrick, who was a finalist for the award a season ago, entered the year as a Fred Haskins Award Watch List member. He also is the current No. 4 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf rankings and on the PGA Tour University rankings.

Brennan earned All-ACC honors a season ago after becoming the first freshman to record back-to-back wins, taking home the title at the Kiawah Invitational and the Wake Forest Invite at No. 2. Additionally, he is the No. 65 amateur golfer in the world

Power joins Fitzpatrick in the top 30 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings at 28 while he comes off a sophomore campaign where he earned All-ACC and PING All-Region honors.

Gillam was the Demon Deacons top finisher at the NCAA Championships as he tied for 13th on the individual leaderboard. The performance helped him earn PING All-America Honorable Mention honors.

Kennon, who made his first collegiate start at the Maridoe Collegiate, is back in the lineup for the second event of the season. The freshman from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. was a two-time Rolex Jr All-American.

  • Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational

    • Old Town Club – Winston-Salem, N.C. – Par 70 – 6,966 yards

    • The club has not only been the home to the three editions of the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational, but also a number of high-level amateur events throughout its history. This includes the 1949 Southern Conference Championship and the 1954 inaugural ACC Championship. Wake Forest legend Arnold Palmer captured the individual title in both events.

    • In total, Old Town has hosted six ACC Championships in addition to six Southern Conference Championships.

Monday, September 27 – First and Second Round – Play begins at 7:30 a.m. ET with teams teeing off No. 1 and No. 10 with continuous play through the second round. Wake Forest will have their two teams both tee off No. 1 starting at 7:30 a.m.

Tuesday, September 28 – Third Round – Play begins at 7:30 a.m. ET with teams teeing off No. 1 and No. 10.
