Wake Forest Sits in Second Place After Round One of Bryan National Collegiate

9/26/2021 6:13:00 PM | Women's Golf

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team is five strokes off the lead after the first 18 holes of play at the 23rd Bryan National Collegiate. Two Demon Deacons are currently inside the top five.

Junior Rachel Kuehn started the day on a high note, shooting a bogey-free three under 33 on her first nine holes of the day. She continued that strong play out of the turn with pars on 10 and 11. Her only bogey of the day came on the par-three 12th hole. She bounced back on 13 and 14 with back-to-back birdies and pars the rest of the way to finish her opening round at four under par.

Freshman Carolina Chacarra started solid with a par on one. Her only bogey on the front came on the par-four second, but she got hot shortly thereafter. Chacarra recorded birdies on holes four and six and then went back-to-back with two more on eight and nine before she made the turn. She came out on the second nine just as steady with pars on 10 and 11. Her first of two birdies on the back came on the par-three 12th as well. After a bogey on the par-three 13th, she responded with a birdie on the par-five 15th. She went straight pars to close the round and the day at four under par. Chacarra and Kuehn are tied for second place on the individual leaderboard heading into the second round.

Junior Lauren Walsh rounds out the Deacs inside the top 25 after the first 18, as she is currently tied for 18th. Walsh started her day as even as you can, recording back-to-back pars on the first two holes. She gained some momentum with a birdie on the par-five third and finished the first nine with straight pars. Coming out of the turn at one under par, she recorded two bogeys on the second nine to finish the day one over par.

For the B squad competing, grad transfer Virunpat Olankitkunchai leads the way. After starting the day with a bogey on the par-four second hole, she recorded two birdies before the turn on the fifth and eighth holes. She kept that momentum coming out of the turn with two more birdies on 13 and 14. A bogey on 16 had her finish the day at two under par, good for tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard.

Making her first appearance for the Old Gold and Black, sophomore Georgia Ruffolo recorded a field-high seven birdies. She finished the round even par and sits inside the top 15 (T14) heading into the second round.
