Wake Forest Returns to Bryan National Collegiate

9/24/2021 11:30:00 PM | Women's Golf

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team returns to the Bryan National Collegiate this fall as co-hosts with UNC Greensboro.

The Deacs are coming off a third-place finish at the prestigious ANNIKA Intercollegiate two weeks ago, which had arguably the toughest field of any regular season event Wake Forest will play in this season.

Senior Vanessa Knecht is poised to make her first appearance in the lineup this season at the Bryan. The Switzerland native was back home participating in the European Tour's Swiss Ladies Open prior to the ANNIKA, which was her first appearance in a professional event. Sophomore Mimi Rhodes, who was the top finisher for the Deacs at the ANNIKA, is at the top of the lineup this week for Wake Forest. Juniors Lauren Walsh and Rachel Kuehn and freshman Carolina Chacarra also return to the lineup from the ANNIKA.

Grad transfer Virunpat Olankitkunchai will lead the lineup for the B squad in Greensboro this week, with sophomore Georgia Ruffolo, redshirt freshman Caroline Smith and redshirt sophomore Julia McLaughlin all making their first appearances for the Demon Deacons. Individual Ava Romfo from UNCG will be playing for the Wake Forest B team to round out the lineup.

About the Bryan National Collegiate
This year is the 23rd edition of the Bryan National Collegiate. The event started in the fall of 1998 as one of the first tournaments of its kind, meaning one of the first women's collegiate tournaments in the area and one of, if not the very first, tournament that paid for the expenses of the teams traveling in to participate. Because of the success of the event, the NCAA awarded a Regional Tournament at Bryan Park in 2006. The course also hosted the ACC women's golf championship in 1993.

"The Bryan National Collegiate was Jim Melvin's creation," said former head coach and Wake Forest sports Hall of Famer Dianne Dailey. "He said the men had all the best tournaments and he wanted to sponsor a tournament where the teams had little expense to play.  It was also a way to honor Mr. Bryan, who loved golf and built Bryan Park. Mr. Melvin proposed a tournament with no entry fee, hotel rooms would be covered, most meals would be paid for and vans for teams flying in would be taken care of. In addition, he got the teams tickets to the Carolina Hurricane games and then the Greensboro Grasshopper games. It was the most special and least expensive tournament in collegiate golf. We have had very competitive fields and many of the students who played went on to have successful LPGA careers. Stacy Lewis (Arkansas) and Brittany Lang (Duke) both won the US Open. The generosity of the Bryan Foundation and Jim Melvin has been astonishing! They set a new standard for women's collegiate tournaments."
