Wake Forest Improves to 10-1 with Shutout at Syracuse

9/26/2021 4:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Demon Deacons notched its 10th shutout win of the year in a 2-0 victory at Syracuse.

SYRACUSE, N.Y.  -- Wake Forest women's soccer team (10-1-0, 2-1-0 ACC) wins their fourth straight road game, eighth multi-goal game and 10th shutout game with a 2-0 win over Syracuse (4-5-1, 0-2-0 ACC).

The Demon Deacons have posted 10 shutouts and have scored 26 goals but only given up one goal to date. The team's 10 shutouts lead the nation.

For the first time since 2011, Wake Forest has opened the season at 10-1-0.

The Deacs' first goal came in the 19th minute from graduate forward Hulda Arnarsdottir, who collected a perfect pass from senior Ryanne Brown to score her second goal in two games. It was Arnarsdottir's 13th collegiate goal.

After the halftime break, the Deacs came out firing as the offense recorded eight of the 13 shots in the bottom 45 compared to Syracuse's four.

Senior Shayla Smart put the nail in the coffin when she recorded her seventh goal of the season off a Zara Chavoshi cross. Smart settled the ball and blasted a shot at the net where the Syracuse keeper got a hand on it, but it bounced in.

12 different Deacs have scored at least one goal this season as Smart leads the team in points (15) and goals (7).

Kaitlyn Park's seventh shutout is tied for the most in the nation. At no surprise, Wake Forest's defense is the best in the country in goals against average.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"We were a little fatigued in the first half today but scored a magnificent goal. We controlled the second half creating some good chances and finally got the second goal off of a perfect long ball from Zara."

"Overall, this was a tough weekend of travel so I'm really proud of our team for earning six valuable ACC road points. It was great to see Giovanna DeMarco back in the lineup as Hulda Arnarsdottir scored two game winners. Our goalkeeping and backline were fantastic. 10 shutouts in 11 games is a huge point of pride for us!"
