Wake Forest Hosting Clemson in Key ACC Match

Wake Forest and Clemson will face off in an important early October match at Spry Stadium.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer will return to Atlantic Coast Conference action against No. 19 Clemson on Friday evening at Spry Stadium. 

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will air live on ACC Network Extra. 

Fan Information
A number of new fan experience enhancements are planned for the 2021 season. This includes expanded food and beverage options, including availability on Walt Chyzowych Alumni Hill, an enhanced in-game experience, featuring an expanded video board production with additional cameras, replay, and fan-engaging elements, as well as new immersive experiences to promote the unique culture that is known around professional and collegiate soccer.

Ticket Information
The best way to enjoy Demon Deacon soccer throughout the 2021 season is through the purchase of Season Tickets. Packages start at only $45 for adults or $25 for youth and seniors. 

For those wishing to purchase single-game admission for Spry Stadium, advance purchases are highly encouraged. Single game chairback seats are available for only $25, while bleacher admission is $20. 

The quickest and most efficient way to order tickets and take advantage of these new seating experiences is to visit GoDeacs.com/Tickets and purchase online or call the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 ext. 1. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Health & Safety Protocols
Wake Forest Athletics works closely with Wake Forest University, Forsyth County and state officials to follow COVID-related guidelines for the safety of fans in attendance at Truist Field and all venues. While proof of vaccination is not currently required for spectators, we encourage vaccinations for all. We are proud that nearly 100% of Wake Forest Athletics student-athletes, staff and coaches are vaccinated, as required under University and Athletics policy. Currently, all academic buildings are closed to visitors, and masks are required in all indoor spaces. For additional information regarding steps the University is taking to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission on campus, we strongly encourage you to review the University's COVID-19 Notice.

Wake Forest has several gameday guidelines and strategies. First and foremost is required face coverings for all unvaccinated fans in attendance. Additionally, all fans must wear a mask indoors at all times, regardless of vaccination status. Wake Forest Athletics also requires all non-team personnel to be masked at all times inside the field enclosure. 

The Matchup 

  • Wake Forest and Clemson will meet for the 52nd time in Friday's match, with this showdown coming at Spry Stadium.  

  • Wake Forest comes into the contest following a 1-0 loss in double overtime to Liberty on Tuesday night.

  • Clemson enters the match off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Pitt in ACC conference play. 

  • The Demon Deacons hold a 24-19-8 advantage in the all-time series. 

  • The last time these teams squared off in April, the Deacs held the then-No. 1 Tigers to a 0-0 draw. 

  • Wake Forest is 1-0-0 against ranked opponents this season ahead of the matchup against No. 19 Clemson. 

  • In the last eight matchups between the two sides, Wake Forest holds a 6-1-1 record. Five of those six wins came when the Tigers were ranked inside the top-10. 

Last Time Out

  • The Demon Deacons suffered an overtime defeat for the first time this season on Tuesday night against Liberty. 

  • Wake Forest recorded 15 shots during the match. It was the seventh time this campaign that the Deacs have put up 15 or more shots in a match. 

  • Junior Omar Hernandez and redshirt junior Jake Swallen led the way with five shots a piece. 

  • Freshman goalkeeper Trace Alphin made his fifth-straight start in net, making two saves. 

  • The Deacs were awarded 10 corners during the game, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. 

  • With the result Wake Forest is now 4-3-1 overall for the 2021 season. 

Quick Hits

  • The Demon Deacons' attack this season has been led by senior Kyle Holcomb and sophomore Chase Oliver, as they have three goals apiece. 

  • Five different Demon Deacons have logged at least two assists on the season, led by redshirt junior Jake Swallen's three. 

  • Sophomore Garrison Tubbs was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week on Sept. 21 following his performance against then-No. 5 Pitt and George Mason. 

  • Freshman goalkeeper Trace Alphin and Clemson goalkeeper George Marks both attended  the same high school (Crossroads FLEX) in Raleigh, N.C.  

Scouting the Tigers 

  • Clemson ended the 2020-21 season with a 14-3-3 overall record and a 7-3-2 record in the ACC. The Deacs and Tigers faced each other three times during the split season, recording a 1-1-1 record.

  • The Tigers hold a 7-2-0 record for this campaign so far. Their season began with a seven-game winning streak for the Tigers.

  • However, the Tigers are currently on a two-match losing streak, falling to UNC Greensboro and Pitt last week. 

  • Clemson returns six players that earned 2021 Spring All-ACC honors: Oskar Argen (Second Team), Luiz Felipe Fernandez-Salvador (Third Team), Justin Malou (Third Team), George Marks (Third Team), Hamady Diop (Freshman Team) and Ousmane Sylla (Freshman Team). 

Looking Ahead

  • Wake Forest hosts William & Mary at Spry Stadium for the last of a three-match homestand. 

  • Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the contest will air on ACC Network Extra.
