WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Senior Alex Fitzpatrick and sophomore Michael Brennan led the Wake Forest men's golf team in the opening round of the Southwestern Invitational on Monday.
Both players sit inside of the top 25 after 18 holes of play with Brennan leading the team with a score of 70 (-2).
He was just one of 18 under-par rounds on the course Monday afternoon as the Leesburg,Va. Native is tied for seventh and just four shots off the individual lead with 36 holes to play in the competition. Wake Forest, who finished the day with a score of 295 (+7), is just six shots outside of the top five and currently in 11th as a team.
Fitzpatrick will be in search of his third consecutive top-25 finish as a first round 73 (+1) has him tied for 25th on the individual leaderboard. After a pair of bogies near the beginning of his round, the senior rebounded to record back-to-back birdies, getting Fitzpatrick back to even.
Brennan and Fitzpatrick both come into spring as top-40 players according to Golfstat with Fitzpatrick at No. 29 and Brennan at No. 39. Additionally, the duo both ranks in the top 30 in the World Amateur Golf Ranks with Fitzpatrick sitting at No. 4 and Brennan at No. 28.
The Demon Deacons will tee off their second round of play on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., playing alongside Pepperdine, Georgia and USC off hole one.
From Coach Haas:
"It was our first competitive round of the spring and we haven't played a ton, but that being said we have to be a little bit better playing the par fives in seven under with a nine as our counter. We had a bad stretch to the middle of the round on holes eight through 11. We are first off tomorrow off number one with the same pairing. We are looking forward to heading back towards red numbers. Each player was very disappointed in their score and their thought process, but this course is very similar to the NCAA Championship. We have to get better at tricky, hard, firm greens. It's not about overpowering it, it's about putting the ball in play. Go Deacons!"
