Women’s tennis will be led by its veteran group during 2022.
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Having officially stepped into its 2022 spring campaign, Wake Forest women's tennis has now selected its season captains, announced on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
The group is comprised of seniors Anna Brylin, Carolyn Campana, Saby Nihalani, and Peyton Pesavento.
"It is an honor for me to officially name Anna, Carolyn, Saby and Peyton captains of this year's team," head coach Jeff Wyshner said. "They've been critical to our success during a very eventful last couple of years, so they have already played a significant role in leadership long before now. I know they are really excited at the potential that this year's team has, and they will do everything they can both on the court and off to help us have as much success as possible and also the best possible team experience."
A four-year letter winner, Brylin has collected a 34-27 career record in solo play up to date and is coming off two match victories versus Tennessee and Davidson, both of which occurred during the Demon Deacons' home opener (Jan. 23). This past fall, she teamed up with Brooke Killingsworth to capture the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championship on Oct. 10, 2021, becoming the first Deacon duo to achieve such a feat. Another impressive moment involved Brylin taking down No. 20 Meg Kowalski of Georgia in singles last May. Brylin is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree and earned an ITA Scholar-Athlete nod from the 2021 season.
Tabbed 35th in the latest ITA rankings for singles, Campana has occupied the No. 1 spot for the Demon Deacons the past few seasons. The Hillsborough, Calif. native started this year with a standout ranked win over No. 41 Tenika McGiffin of Tennessee last weekend (Jan. 23). Campana's impressive 2021 slate saw her attain First-Team All-ACC and All-Academic selections.
Nihalani has competed in two of her last three seasons, posting a 16-7 singles clip during the 2019-20 season. Partnering with Brylin for doubles action in that same season, the two ranked as high as No. 46. Nihalani picked up a win in the Davidson match last weekend (6-2, 6-2).
Another ITA Scholar-Athlete, Pesavento, currently holds a 29-22 career record in singles. Within the early start of this season, she and Nihalani tallied three consecutive wins in doubles play before striking an unfinished match versus Davidson (3-5). In 2021, Pesavento regularly competed as partners with Campana.
Women's tennis heads east to nearby Raleigh for a big test in the incoming days – the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend (Jan. 29-30).
