No. 10 Wake Forest Knocks Off Notre Dame 4-1, Advances to ITA Indoor National Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – For the fifth time since 2016, the No. 10 Wake Forest men's tennis advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, Wa. after knocking off ACC foe Notre Dame 4-1 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

The Demon Deacons (9-1) won the doubles point with victories on courts one and two, before picking up three singles triumphs. With the win, Wake Forest improves to 10-3 in the all-time series against Notre Dame (3-1).

Senior Eduardo Nava clinched match point on court two for the Deacs Saturday inside a rowdy Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center, defeating Aditya Vashistha of Notre Dame in three straight sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Quotable
"We're pumped to go to Seattle. We missed out last year which wasn't the most ideal situation where we played our first match at the kickoff after Covid. The team was motivated to get back, especially at home. Credit to Notre Dame for pushing us and we knew it would be a tough match. We did a great job in doubles and competed well at No. 5 and 6 singles to get us to three. Whenever you get to play against a good team it is always hard to get the fourth point. We were battling there with three third sets and I am happy for Eduardo Nava to clinch it at the end." - Coach Bresky

How It Happened
To begin the day on the doubles courts, the Deacs opened with a win on court two, as Matthew Thomson and Nava took down Peter Conklin and Connor Fu of Notre Dame, 6-2. The Wake Forest duo broke moves to 2-1 on the young year.

Court one of doubles saw No. 19 duo of Jakob Schnaitter and Siddhant Banthia clinch the doubles point by earning a 6-3 victory over Notre Dame's Matthew Che and Axel Nefve. Ben Draper and Robert Maciag's doubles match went unfinished, leading 5-4.

With the Deacs holding a 1-0 lead over the Irish entering singles action, No. 100 Taha Baadi collected Wake Forest's first singles victory as he trounced the Irish's Jean-Marc Malkowski, 6-3, 6-1 on court six to give the Deacs a 2-0 lead.

Seconds later, Notre Dame cut the Wake Forest lead with a win on court one. Graduate student No. 85 Schnaitter set the Deacs up for the clinching point after a 6-4, 6-2 drumming of Peter Conklin.

With a 3-1 lead, Wake Forest's clinching point came on court two with Nava dominating the third set 6-1, and sending the Demon Deacons back to the ITA Team Indoor Championship. The singles matches of Melios Efstathiou on court three and No. 75 Filippo Moroni on court four each went unfinished.
