Women’s tennis will play for the championship tomorrow afternoon in Raleigh.
RALEIGH, N.C. - Stepping into a weekend that is up for grabs for all involved, Wake Forest women's tennis took care of business on opening day (Jan. 29) of the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend. Matched up against Northwestern University, the Demon Deacons clinched the doubles point before totaling three wins in singles.
One could say Saturday was more of a redemption victory for Wake Forest, having fallen to the Wildcats last year in a 4-0 defeat during the 2021 ITA Kickoff championship match.
Anna Brylin, Anna Campana, and Casie Wooten all led the Deacs in singles. With only four available courts, Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth each had to wait their turn for solo play.
How it Happened
-
Two groups of doubles - Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth and Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten - each found themselves in tight battles, taking a 4-3 lead in their respective matches. Nevertheless, Martinelli and Wooten reached a first win of the afternoon (6-3) before Brylin and Killingsworth finished shortly afterward with a 6-3 result of their own.
-
Peyton Pesavento and Saby Nihalani were trailing by a notable deficit before climbing back in third doubles. However, their match would result as unfinished (4-5).
-
Wooten was the first Wake Forest player to win both a set and victory in singles, downing Sydney Pratt in a dominant second set (6-4, 6-1). Brylin subsequently took over Wooten's court.
-
Martinelli started well in singles, winning her first set in a tiebreaker. However, the graduate student ultimately fell short in a three-set showing. Killingsworth then stepped on the court to compete against Northwestern's Ema Lazic.
-
Matched up with #94 Clarissa Hand of the Huskies, Carolyn Campana suffered a three-set loss that tied up the scoring margin at 2-2.
-
After falling short in set one, a motivated Anna Campana took full advantage of her second set en route to a standout win. She didn't let up one game during her final frame.
-
One of two final Deacs remaining, Anna Brylin, stayed heady through two sets before eventually winning due to a code violation. Her match secured the victory for Wake Forest.

From the Head Honcho
"That was a really solid win for our group," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "We trailed by a break in all three doubles and had a huge rally there in the end that gave us the lead, making singles a bit easier to play. It was a good, needed win. Now, we have a big opportunity tomorrow."
