Wake Forest Falls Short in ITA Kickoff Championship Match

Two ACC opponents faced off on Sunday.
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Regional Championship took up Sunday evening (Jan. 30) for Wake Forest women's tennis (2-2), as the Demon Deacons matched up with a familiar conference foe, No. 8 NC State (5-0). The Wolfpack would end the day remaining undefeated with a 4-0 decision that secured a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships being held next month in Madison, Wisconsin.
Wake Forest is now 48-14 in the all-time series versus NC State. The two programs are set to meet again this season on the Wolfpack's grounds (March 8).
How it Happened

Following a delayed start time, NC State won a first match in doubles play (6-1).

Down 0-2 in third doubles, Peyton Pesavento and Saby Nihalani tied up their match by winning back-to-back games. Competition became tight for the next pair of games (3-3) before the duo fell in three straight.

No. 2 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth stayed ahead for nearly all of their doubles match, which ended unfinished.

Underway in singles, No. 35 Carolyn Campana had a major test in taking on No. 8 Jaeada Daniel, as the Wake Forest standout impressively got off to a 3-1 start in her first set.

No. 58 Casie Wooten became the first Demon Deacon to capture a set win in singles for the second day in a row.

After about an hour playing in singles, NC State increased its advantage to 2-0 after winning on court three.

Carolyn Campana continued to fight hard in first singles but eventually fell to Daniel in two sets, which bumped the Wolfpack's lead to 3-0.

Another NC State member, No. 25 Abigail Rencheli, sealed the evening in a two-set finish of her own over Anna Campana.

"It was a tough day," said Wake Forest head coach Jeff Wyshner. "We let doubles slip away and then they (NC State) played great, outhitting us at the top three spots. We've got to learn from this so that we are better in March and April."

This upcoming Saturday (Feb. 5), the Deacs are back home, hosting South Carolina and Campbell University in a doubleheader at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
